AIBU to think they lie about...

The side effects of the 1 year old jabs!

Don't get me wrong I'm massively pro vaccine. This isn't a call to arms for no jabs. But my DS had his a fortnight ago and it's been hell since. Spiking temps, won't sleep, won't eat, super clingy, doesn't want milk, high pitched squeaky protest to going to bed/being put down/being cuddled/not being cuddled/being picked up etc etc.
I've read the NHS leaflets and websites and it plays it all down: mild this, 2-3 days blah blah blah LIES. All my friends with babies the same age say they had a good 2-3 weeks of reactions and poorly babies.
AND I've just read that 3 weeks after the jabs they might get a mild case of MUMPS.

Should also say I have taken my child to a doc who also said it was very normal and the usual side effects they see!

So: AIBU to think they downplay them?

The only time DD2 has been properly unwell in all her 14 years was after her MMR. About a week after the jab she was fevered, off food, d&v and after 2 days of this she was covered from head to toe in "measles like" rash. I know of several others in my immediate school circle who had similar reactions. All of these side effects are listed in the leaflet. However had I been made more aware I would have made sure she didn't have a cold when she had the vaccine and I wouldn't have had them close to Christmas when the GP was closed.

DS1 was one of the unlucky ones who actually get a mild case of measles from the MMR. It threw me a bit as it was over a week after the jab, but apparently that's normal. He had a temperature, whiny, and measles rash. HOWEVER, I will not hesitate to give DS2 the same vaccination when he turns one next year.

MMR is the pits, if that's the one you're talking about - long time since mine were that age. DC1 had all the side effects and was very grumpy. I had to have it too as I was no longer resistant to rubella and wanted a second baby. I felt pants for weeks!
Still, better than the diseases!

Pack insert information here - as published on the NGS website.
Prescribes such as the op describes occur in between 1 in 10 and 1 in 100 recipients (different symptoms have different rates of occurrence).

It is just as wrong to say that these acknowledged side effects do not exist (must be coincidence/bug) as it is to overstate them

scaevola · 01/11/2016 19:37

My bad! The National Garden Scheme has nothing on its website about vaccines,

I meant NHS.

Wheresthemissingsqueakyegg · 01/11/2016 20:44

We are just over a week post vaccination and are experiencing all of what you have described! The nurse told me some of the side effects don't kick in until 7-10 days post vaccine!

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 01/11/2016 20:46

Neither my DC had a reaction nor did DSC apparently.

Hope your DC feels better soon.

Mamabear14 · 02/11/2016 07:44

The only one mine has reacted to is the new men b, and that was with the temperature they tell you they'll get. She was hot, and grouchy for a couple of days. Infinitely preferable to meningitis though.

ateapotandacake · 02/11/2016 14:53

Like I said I'm totally pro vaccine and wouldn't hesitate if we have a number two to ensure they have it. But the leaflets I was given and the NHS vaccinations website do understate what can happen. He has got the unfortunate mild measles and I'm so glad that it's not actual measles.
But then equally if a load of lies off the internet can put people off lifesaving jabs I'll keep my mouth shut.
Thanks for the thoughts! IABU!

yabu
the side effects are all in the leaflet. I always ask to read it or keep a copy (the leaflet is always part of the pack).

but yanbu to be miffed with the nurse. I got some huffing and puffing for requesting to read the leaflet. at least at my last app they had a laminated copy at reception so parents could read while waiting.
