This reminded me of my Christmas night out with work last year to a posh restaurant. The wine waiter poured everyone some wine (white in my case), however, no matter where I am I always ask for a glass of ice as I like to top my wine up with it, firstly to make it extra cold but also to dilute it a wee bit. The wine waiter looked at me as if I had grown an extra head and I never did get my glass of ice. i was too embarrassed to ask again. WIBU in my request?

Nope. Paying customer.

Why not get iced water and alternate drinks. Yuck at diluted wine!

The waiter was being a wine snob. Its acceptable to drink watered wine on the Continent. (But obviously you can never go back there again.)

Years ago I'm the US I ordered vodka and coke and the waitress was agog. 'Vodka? And Coke? Vodka AND Coke, together? In one glass? Really? I never heard that before'.

I just like it with ice Wolfiefan and I have to say all of my friends now do the same - I think I have started a trend.

Ooh tough one. I do do this at home on occasion but I wouldn't in a nice restaurant. It's like asking for ketchup on your fancy nouvelle cuisine creation. Or rocking up at the opera in sweatpants. Sometimes you've got to adapt to your environment.

I don't normally spend a fortune on wine and to be honest I think most people wouldn't know an expensive wine if it bit them on the nose. I just like what I like regardless of price.

I dilute my white wine all the time and I am v posh

I love diluted wine and DH is a real wine anorak so we only drink good stuff.

Although I have heard of freezing grapes so that you can chill wine without diluting it. But seriously who on earth manages to plan that in advance?

I'd rather have an ice cube in my wine and have it properly chilled than let it warm up as I eat.

Still a wine snob though and freak out if someone goes near wine with lemonade... No, just no, a spritzer is fine but it is made with soda water not lemonade!

Watering down wine is fine, it's the temperature of the wine that's the problem. White wine should be chilled but not that cold. However, you are the paying customer - if you like it like that then that's fine.

Abraiid but it's not a waste if that's how OP likes it. It could be a thousand pound bottle but if she prefers it with ice, then that's fine.

As bar staff I was once asked for ice to go with a bottle of red wine.

I didn't and I never would question it, just obliged with a smile! I never really get people in the service industry that can't muster a smile and are snooty. Why do they want to do themselves out of a tip?!

Good manners are about not making others feel uncomfortable. The wine waiter was out of order and you'd have been justified in talking to the manager quietly about manners and customer service.

When i lived in Lourdes my friend always put ice cubes in his red wine and that definitely caught on. "Du vin pour le glacon, du glacon pour le vin", he used to say (some wine for the ice, some ice for the wine). Good excuse to keep topping up. And he's French so you can add "French people do it" to your list of ammo for next time.

Didn't one of the wine brands do a rose on the rocks campaign a few years back.
Imo ok in white or rose, not in red.

Spritzer - water & white wine. Don't see why you can't do it with red (with ice)!
