Looking at the post about someone going into a cafe of the wrong class

This reminded me of my Christmas night out with work last year to a posh restaurant. The wine waiter poured everyone some wine (white in my case), however, no matter where I am I always ask for a glass of ice as I like to top my wine up with it, firstly to make it extra cold but also to dilute it a wee bit. The wine waiter looked at me as if I had grown an extra head and I never did get my glass of ice. i was too embarrassed to ask again. WIBU in my request?

BarbaraofSeville glad we agree at least on the pizza.
Baileys is in the fridge so no ice needed. Would you put ice in Milk? I used to be the same, lasagne and chips or salad on the same plate, all mixed in. Then I came here. And realised it not the done thing, and food actually tastes better separate

I love a calimucho, add brandy for a real kick.....
I like my red wine chilled when it's hot weather too. You can't have it at room temperature when the room is 30 odd degrees, that's stupid. I learnt my wine habits from my Spanish family tho - no wine snobs there (in my family - I'm sure there are wine snobs in Spain!)

I know the difference between cheap and expensive wine. We had 300 bottles at one stage as dh liked to buy and keep. Pre child hobby of course. Don't drink much these days as alcohol no longer agrees with me.

Lived in Germany for a few years. I used to like to get white wine spritzers in the day or hot weather. They don't use the best quality wine and something quite dry works best I find.

On hot days, wine gets too warm and I'd prefer to put an ice cube in than drink it warm. Hang the alcohol snobs. So yes, the waiter was very rude.

YABU for not having asked again when you had been waiting for your ice for a while.

Trills · 29/10/2016 07:20

Grin at Sybil Vimes.

The mark of a really good restaurant or cafe is that the staff want you to have a nice time and will do their best to make it happen.

I suppose we Brits can keep our Vodka and Coke, which is a perfectly normal drink to almost everyone I know and the US can keep their disgusting chocolate, twinkies, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, cheese where cheese should never go.

Exactly. Their chocolate isnt chocolate, it is vile. Twinkies taste of chemicals. Their sweets are bright neon colours. Cheese with everything and it isnt even real cheese it is that vile processed orange stuff.

An American unit exchange student here once told me that she loses weight when she is here as they dont have any foods here that she likes so she is very picky. I thought what the fuck do you eat that you cant find in London.

They eat the most disgusting things but then turn their nose up visibly about what is offered here.

She actually gagged at the mention of bacon sandwiches? Didnt they invent BLT?! They also thought it disgusting that sometimes we put bacon on the turkey when we cook it.

Neon orange chemical filled fake cheese is fine on everything though.

I water down wine too as it gets me very drunk and I am not much of a wine drinker anyway

To be fair, the service I've had at restaurants in New York has been absolutely amazing - unfailingly polite, helpful and friendly. Waiting tables is seen as a genuine vocational choice over there, which might be why waiters in the states tend to be a whole lot nicer and less chippy about every bloody thing. (With apologies to nice British waiters like my Hawksmoor guy)

QueenLizIII · 29/10/2016 12:58

Service is good in NYC unless you forget to give them a tip. You even tip for a fucking coffee out there.

They practically threw my friends coffee at her in starbucks and said thanks for the tip...NOT.

DamePastel · 29/10/2016 16:31

I get scared in noo yoik. They scream at you ''whaddaya want?" when you walk in. 'um, a table? please'

SymbollocksInteractionism · 29/10/2016 16:48

I always have ice in my wine (not red though)
I just prefer it really cold, I wasn't aware it was odd!!

user1474627704 · 29/10/2016 16:56

Ancient Greeks drank watered down wine. You could say that in case you want to outsnob the snobbish waiter

They also added honey and salt to their wine, so I don't think thats a good argument against snobbishness.

It's like chefs refusing to cremate your steak. They are right to do that too.

AlpacaPicnic · 29/10/2016 17:15

My dad drinks chilled red wine too.
Mind you my dads been known to top red wine up with cider to make 'posh cider and black' so thats nice...

Revealall · 29/10/2016 17:57

I think restaurants have a point though. You wouldn't go into an Indian and ask them to take all the spices out, or a fish and chip shop and ask for sushi. A posh restaurant also have dress codes and other seemly pointless rules. Is is their choice though.
They have put effort into their vision; sourced ingredients, come up with a menu and chef wants you to taste what he's made. It's a bit odd to expect to do something the way you want, when you are paying for their ideas on food/ ambience etc.
I put ice in wine at home but mostly because I can't long enough for them to chill properly.

CoteDAzur · 29/10/2016 20:53

"They do red wine and Coke in Hungary too."

As in... mixed? Shock

MyGiddyUncle · 29/10/2016 20:55

Dh is a red wine drinker and he occasionally has it half and half with coke, it goes really well apparently.

LockedOutOfMN · 29/10/2016 20:59

Red wine and Coke is called kalimotxo in the Spanish Basque country (or calimocho in the rest of Spain).

LockedOutOfMN · 29/10/2016 21:03

bumble The waiter was rude, and inefficient. Next time, keep asking for your ice until you get it. And, if you don't, then no tip! Ice is a reasonable request in any bar or restaurant, and it doesn't matter what the customer wants it for.

CoteDAzur · 30/10/2016 08:17

"red wine drinker and he occasionally has it half and half with coke, it goes really well apparently"

Maybe if one drinks to get drunk.

Most people appreciate wine for its subtle tastes and especially its aftertaste and aroma/bouquet. Mixing it with coke will erase all of that and leave you with alcohol & lots of sugar.

I recommend Limoncello for your DH. I think he would like it.
