To not know transvestite was an offence term?

Sorry for my ignorance but I always thought that a transvestite was a person who dressed in the opposite genders clothes and a transsexual was someone who was planning to actually have the operation to become the opposite gender.

Is this incorrect, I read that transvestite is offensive and no longer used.

Seriously?

Would you prefer 'difficult' ?
Although you probably got the drift...just being picky? Hmm

SaggyNaggy · 17/10/2016 13:30

peach

Its not a term used for women though really I guess. Its usually used for men wearing women's clothes. Which is far more taboo and unseen.
Its an old joke but it goes:

"Why is it that my girlfriend can wear my boxers and shirt and its no big deal? They're comfy, warm, nice. But if I wear her knickers and blouse we have to have a little chat?"

I wouldn't spend a nanosecond of my day giving a shiny shite about what Laverne Cox has to say. Or Edfie Izzard for that matter.

BowieFan · 17/10/2016 15:49

Isn't a transvestite someone who dresses up in the manner of a different gender but actually identifies as their birth gender? As an example, Frank N Furter in Rocky Horror is a transvestite. He is a man, identifies as one but dresses up in a bustier and fishnets and heels.

Gowgirl · 17/10/2016 16:05

Still a great film and show blanche!

Gowgirl · 17/10/2016 16:07

He looks damn good in his fishnets and boa, but is defiantly male but my strange crush on Tim curry is neither here nor there, you have however found me a film for tonight thanks muchly

I found this thread very interesting!

My OH is on the tools and to him a 'tranny' is a transit van. I'm not from the area we live in now but he is, and where i'm from 'tranny' was used as most people would think - a not particularly nice shortening of transvestite. So when I heard him on the phone telling a colleague where he'd left the tranny's keys I was shocked! When he came off the phone I asked him about it and he said 'A tranny is a van, a man who wears women's clothes or the other way around is a cross dresser'. Obviously he's heard of the term being used in the other way, but that's just not what it means to him and he'd never use it in that way. Just shows how words are used so widely and differently across the country.

GipsyDanger · 17/10/2016 16:15

But what about the sweet transvestites From sensational, Transylvania?

Sorry, just watched rocky horror lately Grin

GipsyDanger · 17/10/2016 16:17

*transexual not sensational.
Although, Tim Curry is sensational. As a sweet transvestite from transsexual Transylvania.

Gowgirl · 17/10/2016 16:18

He's not much of man by the light of day...
But by night he's one hell of a lover!

BowieFan · 17/10/2016 16:22

I've got Rocky Horror on the brain I think. Went seeing the live show the other week (fell head over heels in love with the bloke who plays Rocky in it) and I'll be trotting out the DVD of it in time for Halloween I think!

Gowgirl · 17/10/2016 16:26

I'm desperate to go the rocky horror Halloween banquet but dh wont go, bloody spoil sport!

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 17/10/2016 16:27

As far as I know transvestite and transexual are all under the same umbrella of transgender now. Hence the number of TW who have no interest at all in a sex change as they have a female penis Hmm

FlyingElbows · 17/10/2016 16:37

Lavernock Cox? Bitch, please!

Gowgirl · 17/10/2016 16:44

Love it flying elbows !!!!!
I'm posting that on every trans thread from here on inGrinWine

DemonNameChanger · 17/10/2016 16:48

Wasn't David Beckham photographed wearing a skirt? I doubt he would identify as transvestite or transgender. I'm sure Nicky Wire has said in interviews that he isn't a cross dresser despite wearing skirts on stage & lots of make up.

I allways thought transsexual, now transgender, people claimed they were male born in a female body or female but born in a male body- if that's the case then shouldn't the term be 'transsex/trans-sex' because male/female is sex not gender.

If transgender is exactly as it sounds what would happen to that person of they moved to one of the tribes where gender roles were reversed (the ones used to illustrate the social construction of gender theory) where women go off to hunt and men stay and nurse babies (as in use their non milk producing nipples as dummies- can't type the techniqual term as it makes me heave from the days of blood dripping nipples when establishing breastfeeding).

If people feel their body doesn't match how they feel inside I get that, transitoning or living as the sex you feel you should have been makes sense. But if a man is wearing a skirt can't we just call him a man in a skirt? Especially if that's what he himself chooses to call it?

GowGirl FlyingElbows

These were Frank/Rocky when I saw it. You can see why I fell a bit in love with both of them! Blush

Gowgirl · 17/10/2016 19:31

Well we've totally derailed the thread, so meatloaf as Eddie? Was he great or what!

Mamabear14 · 17/10/2016 19:37

Rocky horror is my all time favourite film. David bedella up there as Frank was absolutely awesome, I fell a bit in lust with him in his stockings!

BowieFan · 17/10/2016 19:40

Meat Loaf is my favourite Eddie ever.

As for Frank, David Bedella is up there with Tim! Anthony Head made me fall in love with him when he played Frank. There's definitely something about that character...

BowieFan · 17/10/2016 19:41

It upsets me though when all the men who have played Frank look far better in stockings and a bustier than I, a woman, ever would! Grin

Dontpanicpyke · 17/10/2016 19:53

Bowie. Totally agree Meat loaf is ace.

Gowgirl · 17/10/2016 20:30

Oohhhh Giles as frank, I'm so jealous!!!!!!

Gowgirl · 17/10/2016 20:33

Worth a wolf whistle any day! Back in lust with Giles!!!
