To not know transvestite was an offence term?

Sorry for my ignorance but I always thought that a transvestite was a person who dressed in the opposite genders clothes and a transsexual was someone who was planning to actually have the operation to become the opposite gender.

Is this incorrect, I read that transvestite is offensive and no longer used.

Transvestite is an OK name for a transvestite - a man wearing traditionally female clothes. Tranny is right out, even though they sometimes use the term themselves. Transgender is an umbrella term for people in that whole area, particularly people who don't believe their gender matches their sex. Laverne Cox is American and they use the words a bit differently over there.(You won't believe what they call bottoms!)

Tim Curry was the best.
David Bedella second.
Jason Donovan third.

My understanding is that it's not offensive so long as you are using the correct term for the person you are talking about.

Transvestite = cross dressing but still identifies as the gender which they were born (eg: Eddie Izzard)

Transgender = dressing, living and identifying as the opposite sex to which you were born. ie: people who were born the wrong gender physically.

Transsexual = same as transgender re: wrong body but has gone through sex change operation or taken medication to make physical changes (voice / hair growth/ breasts etc) BUT I have also heard that some people that have gone through a sex change operation still don't use the term transsexual and prefer transgender.

Trans = general term to cover all above.

If in doubt ask the person in question which term they want you to use.

No I didn't think it was offensive either.

If transvestite is offensive, then surely transexual is offensive too, as they both can be shortened to "tranny".

Oh and where I live the term Tranny is generally referring to the Radio. (Derived from Transistor radio). As is 'I love this song. Turn up the tranny'
