To book annual leave for my birthday?

I really hate working my birthday, but have sucked it up and done it the last few years. I could book the day off, but it will mean a day less to spend with DC in the school holidays, and an extra day's childcare to pay for. Oh, and due to the stupid leap year I'll miss a weekend birthday day so feel that I've been robbed.

I'm also working all of Christmas/New Year other than the weekend and the bank holidays.

I would. It's the one day you are allowed to be completely selfish.

My old work gave everyone the day off on their birthday, as an extra day holiday. Genius idea.

YANBU I hate working on my birthday. Would always book it off given a chance. My little treat for me.

Always book it off. Any cap that can happen will seem worse on your birthday, best not leave it to chance!

DP and I book our own and each other's birthdays off and have a day of fun. It's great. Why would you not, if you have enough leave?

Yanbu. It's my only annual leave splurge. Everything else is kept for school holidays.

Do it! I did this year as my birthday was on a Monday, a normal Monday at work is bad enough.
And leap years skipping weekend birthdays sucks, sympathies!

Fuck it, I might do it. I haven't really got enough holiday, but a Monday birthday at work is just grim.

Because it's one less day I can take in school hols, which means paying for holiday club.

I always do. I learnt it from my mum. And when one of my staff was leaving the department she said it was one of the best things I taught her.

I don't get it. Why do you hate working your birthday? It's not clear from your post what the issue is. For me it's just another day so maybe that's why I don't understand.

I can't remember ever working on my birthday, I always book it off.

I would let DDs have the day off school on their birthdays (when they start) but apparently it's not allowed

I hate it because IT'S MY BIRTHDAY! It's my day for doing what I want.

Book it off, absolutely, but spend it wisely. And by wisely I mean make the day all about you and all the things you love doing but never get chance to.

I don't get adults being precious about their birthdays and would begrudge paying for a day's childcare somewhere else.

But if it's important to you, and the money is not an issue then up to y ou.

What could I do with my day? If I'm kind and don't send DC to after school club I'll have about 5.5 hours.

My birthday is in January and I certainly never bother booking the day off. Besides my colleagues make a big thing of everyone's birthday. I have far more fun if I go to work on the day.

Actually, there is a museum I'd like to visit child free. Or perhaps a child free trip to the art gallery.

Or I could go to the cinema and watch something that's not animated.

Or stay in my pjs and read a book, uninterrupted. And eat my birthday chocolates without sharing.

I've been working for over 10 years and I've never worked on my birthday, book it off.

I always book mine off then find a friend who is off (although I'm lucky and my amazing mate actually booked my birthday off last year!) and go for lunch or cinema or best of all an afternoon tea

I always take the day off, and the day after, in case of booze.

I'll make sure I'm not on the rota for the nearest weekend either.

I request DC's birthdays off too. Luckily 2 of them have their birthdays (usually) in the school hols, as do I.

I do now since the worst birthday at work ever (I'm a nurse) as I was crying by 9am on my birthday. Never working on that day again if I can help it!
