To think that most breakfast cereals are really insubstantial?

imo - the best breakfast cereals are Weetabix , bran flakes and the muesli based - ones - I've always liked Alpen. But things like corn flakes, rice krispies, coco pops , frosties - I mean really?

I used to love Kellogg's variety packs but tbh I just think now they don't contain even 1 good cereal!!

Just carbs is a terrible idea and that's what most are. Protein in the morning please.

SunnyBanker · 03/09/2016 19:34

Well yes...it doesn't take much nutrition knowledge to tell you that a bowl of weetabix is likely to be better for you than a bowl of frosties!

JammyDodger16 · 03/09/2016 19:34

Alpen is full of sugar and probably has more than all of those. Weetabix and bran flakes I love and think are good but would normally add fruit to them

Mypurplecaravan · 03/09/2016 19:35

They're shit in a box aren't they?

Nothing insubstantial about a good shit mind you

SunnyBanker · 03/09/2016 19:35

Don't you have milk on your cereal Mrs Terry?

Emz449 · 03/09/2016 19:36

Weetabix and banana is my favourite breakfast over any other cereal/eggs. Find that I'm not hungry until lunchtime

SunnyBanker · 03/09/2016 19:38

Oh and on the subject of protein...in a typical 250ml glass of milk (and mine have a load of milk with cereal, at least 250ml), there's about 8g of protein.

The average 6 year old needs 20g of protein a day so that 'carb only' bowl of weetabix for ds2 is providing him with approaching half of his daily allowance.

m0therofdragons · 03/09/2016 19:38

Oh ffs go and eat some carrot sticks and hummus goes and gets bowl of coco pops. Yum!

Life is about balance not eating amazingly healthily all the time. If it works for you then great but coco pops got me through a twin pregnancy with one bowl in the morning and no need for food until late lunch. It's not the Devils food it's just fucking food - puffed rice with a bit of chocolate / sugar!

MrsTerryPratchett · 03/09/2016 19:38

Not tons. How much protein in a cup of milk? Which is more than I'd have. 3 grams?

MrsTerryPratchett · 03/09/2016 19:40

Well if they're having 250ml of milk with it!

It's not about judging FFS so why get so Hmm Just doesn't fill me up, that's all. I don't care if you and yours live on cocoa puffs.

SunnyBanker · 03/09/2016 19:42

Is that to me MrsTerry? Who shit on on your chips today? Hmm

CapricornCalling · 03/09/2016 19:43

When I have a bit of a binge eat day I have Alpen WITH sugar on top!! Shock.

I'm afraid cocopops etc wouldn't have enough substance for me.

In a word - porridge. Not the instant stuff, but proper oats that need overnight soaking, cooked with 50:50 water:milk. Wonderful stuff, and very cheap.

bakeoffcake · 03/09/2016 19:44

I haven't eaten cereal for about 15 years. It all tastes like cardboard to me.

I have poached egg on toast or if I'm not very hungry, plain yogurt and fruit.

MrsTerryPratchett · 03/09/2016 19:44

No Sugar it wasn't!!! At least the first paragraph was but not the second!

duskonthelawn · 03/09/2016 19:46

Seconding porridge for filling up and deliciousness, it tops cereal. So many things you can add to it too!
Or dippy eggs and soldiers

NeedsAsockamnesty · 03/09/2016 19:47

I now want coco pops

CapricornCalling · 03/09/2016 19:47

Sorry yes I totally forgot - I love porridge - I'm planning to have it one day this week.

bakeoffcake - you're spot on. a lot do taste like cardboard.

Mumsnet users seem to hate cereal but it is very popular, while aisle dedicated to it.

I don't really like cereal but I eat it because it's quick. I can't be bothered to make eggs each morning.

ImperialBlether · 03/09/2016 19:52

If anyone's got teenage boys, get them onto porridge for breakfast - it'll keep them going far longer than anything else.

missyB1 · 03/09/2016 19:59

Hubby likes Quakers Porridge oats, I will eat only bran flakes or muesli. Ds eats readybrek.
But to be honest I'm sick of all cereals, thinking about trying smoothies instead. Can't face toast in the morning either.

lljkk · 03/09/2016 20:22

What does "substance" mean? Do you mean you don't feel full for very long afterwards?

m0therofdragons · 03/09/2016 20:30

Meh, me and mine occasionally have coco pops and other days have porridge or weetabix. It annoys me when people class a food as shit. I have a dc who is underweight and has big worries about weight gain which is never helped by people who make sweeping statements about food.

CapricornCalling · 03/09/2016 20:38

lljkk - yes - that and the feeling that you're really tucking into something, iyswim.

On another note, Shreddies aren't bad.

Most cereals are probably low fat, right? So that would partly explain why they aren't very filling.
