To leave my new job after a day?

I feel awful.

I hate it because it's just dull and the day drags. There isn't enough work to fill the day

The people I'm working with are lovely and I don't want to leave them in the lurch.

One day is hardly long enough to get a proper view of a job. YABU. At least stick it out until you have found another job!

My old workplace would be delighted to have me back so it's not that I'm concerned about, it's leaving them in the lurch.

Do you KNOW that that's how your working day will actually turn out once you are fully onboarded? Give it three months at least!

If there is no work then you won't be leaving them in the lurch..but you might not be doing yourself any favours. At least find a new job first.

It would be mental if they gave you 8 hours work on your first day in loads of jobs. Great that they're easing you in gently, give it time.

Yanbu-nobody does much on their first day, cos it takes time to get into any role. Give it a week at least before getting all dramatic

I knew on my first day of new job I hated it but stuck it out for 9 months before I finally gave up!

Well, at the risk of sounding a bit bigheaded, I can do the tasks quite quickly. (That's intended factually rather than boastfully, promise!)

I don't think it's dramatic to consider you might have made a wrong move and consider putting it right

I get you on it but it all just depends. I wouldn't worry about leaving people in the lurch exactly if you never have to see them ever again anyway

Unless someone actually beat you up or something then leaving would just be absurd.

I think one day is a bit short. Give it a few days/weeks. What's your probation period?

Remember that's for you just as much as it is for new job.

I would see what happens the next time you are in but if still feeling the same way after that then perhaps it isn't the right place for you. Sometimes you just have that gut feeling that it's not the job for you. It may depend on the line of work, as you may be coming to the job new, or it may have been a sideways move, or a move to a higher position doing the same role you did elsewhere.

Only you can decide... I would sleep on it though and then see what the next day brings and then chat to manager.

I've never been in a job where it hasn't dragged on the first day! YABU and have very unreasonable expectations in my opinion. If you like the people, that's half the battle already won.

I don't think you're necessarily being unreasonable. I started a new job in January and quit at lunchtime on my second day. I just knew it wasn't for me and I didn't want to waste anymore of their time training me up.

It was a different 'career' change. I went from retail management to a Monday - Friday office job. But it just wasn't for me, I think sometimes you just 'know'.

What type of work is It? Are you hugely over quallified? Could you be proactive and find other work to do?

I posted an identical thread last year, and got told by everyone to stick it out in case it got better. It didn't, and I've never been as relieved as I was when I left. I did wait until I had another offer though, it's much easier to get a job when you already have one.
