DS broken tooth and play scheme

So I picked my six year old up today and found that he had a broken front tooth, split lip and scratched nose after crashing a scooter. The play scheme didn't know he had broken his tooth. I was absolutely furious, no accident form had been done and they were surprised when I showed them his tooth. He told an adult at the time he'd broken his tooth and the adult said he had done similar when younger.
I'm angry because it had happened at lunchtime and I could have taken him to the dentist straight away had I known. I am upset no one knew about it and it must have really hurt. It looks awful.
I don't want this to happen to anyone else. Accidents happen, but the way he was looked after is what is upsetting me. He goes there after school and they usually look after him well. I want to be reassured they will review their accident procedures.
They phoned me later and said they had an accident form, which seems convenient. I'm sad and angry and not sure what to do about this. AIBU to complain to head office or is it better to deal with the manager at the place, who to be fair was really shocked?

YABU nothing would have changed for getting him to the dentist at lunchtime and accidents happen.

OP you're right to be concerned- there were many things gone wrong here- that it happened in the first place, that when he told an adult, he was misunderstood, several other adults assumedly saw a bloodied child and did nothing.
None of these events is inexcusable but for all three to happen is a bit worrying.

But shouldn't the people looking after him have known he had broken his tooth? Seems pretty lax care. What if he'd been knocked out? Would they have known? I am not angry he broke his tooth I'm angry no one knew or let me know. His lip is pretty badly split too.

The play scheme didn't know he'd broken his tooth. Well if they'd have checked him over thoroughly they'd have known he had a broken tooth. Anyone can see a broken tooth. You don't have to be a medic. Before all the "They're Childcare workers not Doctors" comments start popping up.
I'm not surprised you're angry. Yes accidents happen, but the way it was dealt with is awful.

I'm glad theyve now got an accident form for their sakes as they are a legal requirement.

Thanks for the replies. Hopefully it's fixable as its a front, adult tooth and broken diagonally. He seems OK, but has a sore mouth. I feel really guilty for sending him there, he was due to be there all week till I'm on holiday next week.

I would have been very unhappy if my child had been walking around all afternoon with these injuries and nothing being recorded (surely they would have noticed blood or your child crying at the very least) No excuses for not even noticing! Total lack of care on their part.

Blimey our play scheme would have phoned me about a broken tooth to see if I wanted to come and fetch him and would have had about 15 forms in triplicate to be signed when I did arrive to pick him up. Have you asked to see their accident policy /procedure? My guess is it wasn't followed properly in terms of assessing the injury and if this is the case when you have seen it you need to make a written complaint stating this. A broken tooth is pretty upsetting for a child. Most worrying is the lack of assessment by the staff and first-aider though. Hope he's ok now despite the tooth?

They did rinse his mouth. He still had blood on his face when I collected him, so they knew he had hurt himself. Just not the extent or the exact circumstances.

I would have been furious. Livid even. Nothing in comparison to your DS op, but today my DS returned from holiday camp in tears ( he's 5) because he was starving. Some little shit at the camp had stamped all over his packed lunch and had taken out all of his food and drink and thrown it everywhere. I was ( and still am furious ). The staff never said a word when I picked him up.

Lord no, YANBU. They have a duty of care to your Son and that never happened. Hope that he is ok and feels better soon OP. Flowers

I was so angry at the time I told them I couldn't talk to them calmly and would come in tomorrow to talk about it properly after they had looked into it. I'm not going to send him there again in the holiday and different people work there after school so I'm going to think about if he can go back after I see how they respond when I talk to them again.

I think you need to submit a formal written complaint to whoever is in charge of the scheme. There's nothing that they can say tomorrow that will put right their failure to respond appropriately to an injury.

Accidents happen, he is a young boy riding a scooter so can have an accident on it, but the way they handled it was shoddy. They should have called you and completed an accident form.

It's a baby tooth, he will be losing the lot of them very soon, the dentist wouldn't have done anything ergo you are being unreasonable

YANBU, I would be fuming. They should know he'd broken his tooth and they should have written it up and rang you.

But, I have a story that I hope makes you feel better. I chipped my adult front tooth when I was 10. I got it repaired at the dentist and you can't even tell now, so it is fixable. I've had no issues since. :)

Ideally I would like to know that they will act differently in the future. He had a box dropped on him and split his head a few months ago and they called straight away, so something has changed in the time between then and now. I'm sure the accident was completely unavoidable, but I hate thinking of him breaking his tooth and no one listening to him. I will definitely ask for a copy of the policy and who the first aider is.

Yes, accidents happen, but the way this was handlled was poor. You need to make a complaint in writting.

My DC weren't' allowed on scooters in after school club without a helmet for insurance reasons, they told me. Was he wearing one? I told my DC not to wear the ill-fitting helmets and therefore they couldn't use the scooters

Dd got hit in the mouth with a table tennis bat by a student teacher at school and broke her front adult tooth in half Angry. It was around Christmas time, dodgy dentist (who got struck off mid treatment), but she finally got the tooth rebuilt and it looks great now. Only potential problem is that she is now having orthodontic treatment and they have to monitor damaged tooth carefully.

We never did get a copy of the investigation report.....

I understand how angry you must be - but focus on getting good dental treatment. Hugs for you and ds.

disclaimer-am dentist I'd be livid and prompt treatment is really important in dental trauma second disclaimer-my son broke both front adult teeth at a swimmimg pool so have seen it from both sides.
I'd be making a formal complaint that you weren't informed promptly so you could get him treatment.

I can't believe the poster who's saying you are being unreasonable, you're very much not. Poor child, having to live with that all afternoon with no one taking it seriously.
