To think 17 mugs isn't hoarding?

Watched "Selling houses with Amanda Lamb" last night and a cottage was featured which had a mix and match kitchen. The couple were criticised for having a collection of 17 mugs. Surely that's not excessive?! We have big groups of people around regularly and we'd be lost with only a few mugs!

Not at all unless you never plan on letting anyone into your house.

There's only 2 of us but I have loads of mugs as people come round. I actually was nearly caught short once when loads of my family came over for a special occasion and it was so embarrassing but we made do with some coffee glasses!

That's exactly what I thought and I couldn't really work out what an acceptable, non-hoarding amount would be! I do love a good mug Smile

I've got loads of mugs!

But they don't all match.

Yanbu. If you have a few people over and don't want to be washing mugs constantly then you need quite a few mugs.

I much prefer mismatched mugs, easier to remember who has what.

Mine are a combo of sets and some random one offs from my time at Uni..plus ones that used to be in a set but have been sadly predeceased. I've got a lovely retro Kelloggs mug that used to have 2 matching companions in different colours.

I've had a clear out and shifted a pile of stuff, and that's after dd and I sorted the cupboards last year when she had a student flat and kitchen to fill

I still have
8 cups/saucers
8 mugs to match
8 new blue mugs (this is what romted the latest clear out)
8 bodum glass coffee mugs
and at least half a dozen odd mugs that I am not allowed to chuck.

Not having enough crockery to go round is a fear of mine...I am a tad panicky as I am down to eight large dinner plates. 3) #firstworldproblem

Yeah, the programmes seem to have the same outcome as Escape to the Country - wealthy couple with a huge budget are presented with 3 or 4 lovely houses, all rejected for pedantic reasons and always finishing with "their search continues"!

I think I have about 60. I have been known to run out of clean mugs at times like Christmas when all the extended family come to visit. If I only had 17 people would end up waiting for a drink.

If you have a dishwasher you need about that before the mug bit is full and that is our small dishwasher. Plus we have small coffee cups.

I don't think it's an issue as long as you've got enough storage space for them.

I will have to count my mugs as soon as I get home, but I definitely have more than 17. However, I think it must have been lack of mugs being in cupboard rather than the number of mugs, because there is no such thing as too many mugs.

I've got more that that, even after I took a load of least fave ones in to work. I like buying a nice mug.

The issue on the show was that they had 17 on display and it didn't help their already cluttered kitchen. I don't drink tea but now feel bad that I only have 2 in the house!

I thought the show was awful though, it felt like she bullied the homeowners into making some of those changes!

Blimey- we have 18 in the everyday sets, about 12 non-matching ones, and 8 in the halfway-presentable dinner set.

I've got more than 17 mugs. I like to collect a mug from places I visit. I even like the ones that come with an Easter egg. My nana said that mismatched crockery is called a 'harlequin tea set'. So nerrr to snobs!

What is it about mugs? I have three old chipped ones that himself wanted to chuck. I rescued them for pen holders as I couldn't bear to see them go in the bin.

I once took 62 mugs from my mum's kitchen to the charity shop. That still left her with far more than she needed. I can't imagine why she was keeping them.

I know people who only have five mugs, but surely, if you invite groups of people, you will need 17 mugs or more.

Hoarding is collecting things of little to no worth that you don't use because you think you might be able to use them somewhen later. It's pathological.

Nice, clean mugs in a nice clean cupboard certainly have nothing to do with hoarding.

Mugs are strangely addictive. Like others on here, I like getting new ones, but feel cruel parting with the old ones. (I fill them with pens or plants.)

!7 isn't hoarding - actually I regard that as a lightweight.
