To think 17 mugs isn't hoarding?

Watched "Selling houses with Amanda Lamb" last night and a cottage was featured which had a mix and match kitchen. The couple were criticised for having a collection of 17 mugs. Surely that's not excessive?! We have big groups of people around regularly and we'd be lost with only a few mugs!

I've got loads of mugs, about 20 I'd say. There are only 2 of us and we don't invite people around. Grin I'm sure I'm a hoarder, looks lovingly at 8 piece dinner set, 4 piece dinner set, everyday set, 6 piece dinner set, square 6 piece dinner set and a large sideboard crammed with best stuff Blush

amusedbush · 04/08/2016 19:12

I have two mugs and no functional spare room, which is excellent for deterring guests Grin

pointythings · 04/08/2016 19:27

We have at least 30. Some are nice sets of Denby that we got as wedding presents. We never use them except for guests because are too attached to our mad motley mugs that don't match.

Anyone who refuses to buy our house because of our mug collection is a twat. Not that we're planning on going anywhere.

TheWernethWife · 04/08/2016 19:54

I have more than 17 but keep them in a cupboard out of sight. Saw it last night and Amanda was right, the kitchen did look cluttered. Love the programme and don't think she bullies people, some need a good kick up the bum if they can't see the state of their homes and need someone to point it out.

MrsJoeyMaynard · 04/08/2016 20:06

The issue on the show was that they had 17 on display and it didn't help their already cluttered kitchen.

Criticising the mug collection makes a bit more sense now. I can see how having mugs out on a counter or whatever might make a place look cluttered and lacking in storage space to potential buyers.

If mugs are put away neatly in a cupboard then surely there'd be no issue with having 17 or more.

RaspberryOverload · 04/08/2016 20:28

I'm sure we have at least that many in the cupboard. They get use once maybe twice and into the dishwasher. We don't have the dishwasher on everyday, hence number of mugs in cupboard. And for groups of visitors too.

CremeEggThief · 04/08/2016 20:36

I LOVE getting rid of stuff, but even I have 11 mugs, 4 espresso cups and 1 French coffee bowl. Only 2 of us here and not many visitors.

I have:
6 Royal Albert cups and saucers
6 English Cadtles cups and saucers
6 coffee cups and saucers (non branded, bought in Egypt long ago)
And 34 mugs, comprising 4/5 matching sets and even...wait for it....2 Charles and Diana wedding mugs.

Nanasueathome · 04/08/2016 20:50

I collect Emma Bridgewater crockery
My DIL says I have far too much and do not need to buy any more
I have just ordered 2 of the Dalmatian mugs from the new range

No idea how many I have now but I do donate to my sister from time to time if that helps

ChishandFips33 · 04/08/2016 21:11

I saw this too...cringed as we have way more and then thought sod it, 17 would never be enough!

Ellybellyboo · 04/08/2016 21:19

We have loads of mugs. Probably more than 17

Although, as 75% of them are in DD1's bedroom at any given time, it's not really enough Grin

We have at least 17 random non matching everyday mugs plus 8 that match our dinner service

2ndSopranosRule · 04/08/2016 22:07

We've got around 40 Blush.

A few sets, but mostly randoms. I love mugs and regularly rotate the ones on the mug tree. Or sometimes I'll fancy one I've not used for a bit. Blush I'm always hankering after new mugs but DH stops me . I have three further ones at work, too! One picture mug dh had made, one that my parents bought me when I got my first mug-requiring job in 2001 and another I got as a freebie and that happens to be a nice size.

Every mug has provenance in my world.

Trills · 04/08/2016 22:08

I have

12 mugs.

Or 14 if you count the ones I use to hold makeup.

And I LIVE ALONE.

MerlinsScarf · 04/08/2016 22:18

Thank goodness for this thread, I'm feeling much better about my mug sentimentality now. I can't bear to get rid of the old favourites.

Didn't see the episode but I'd get rid of any amount of random clutter before chucking a nice mug collection.

Bingybongybashy · 04/08/2016 23:13

I have about 30 mugs. I'm addicted to mugs, love buying new ones. I Can remember where each one is from. Each has a story. Cannot abide matching sets, they mean nothing! God help anyone who touches my two Take That tour mugs!

BeaLola · 05/08/2016 00:33

I have way more than 17 ! They are mostly in cupboard. We have 8 matching le creuset ones, some Denby matching ones and then all my favourite Emma bridgewater, some lovely unusual flower ones and even one from my brother that he bought me with his pocket money when I was thirteen - now 48! I would have more but meany DH moans at me ! ( he is fab otherwise)

Haven't included tea sets, dinner service coffee and tea ware etc etc

Persephone76 · 05/08/2016 15:37

"Harlequin teaset" - I like it! I always get new mugs in the January sales - this year I got a gorgeous Norwegian folk influenced set of 4 - 2 tree designs, 1 bird and 1 abstract. Love them! I actually quite like seeing mugs on display - I can see it could add to a cluttered look but I think it shows personality.

HellsBellsnBucketsofBlood · 05/08/2016 15:39

I've got about 25 none of which match Grin

HellsBellsnBucketsofBlood · 05/08/2016 15:39

Wouldn't keep them on the side though - they're dust magnets

HereIAm20 · 05/08/2016 16:20

We had the kitchen done recently and I counted mugs as I packed them up - 100! I managed to thin them down to 97 when I unpacked though Smile

Idliketobeabutterfly · 05/08/2016 16:25

I have loads of mugs.... Personally I blame the mug fairy.

That1950sMum · 05/08/2016 16:34

Try being a teacher - you get more than 17 mugs each Christmas and each end of year!
