To put linoleum down in toddler's bedroom?

We're moving into a new house. DS is 19 mo. We were going to put carpet down, but it occurred to me that linoleum would be ideal because it's naturally antibacterial and easy to clean (that's why hospitals have it right?). I am anticipating accidents when we start potty training, and when he spills drinks etc. But is lino a bit grim?

It's a bit grim... Wooden floor? DDs 5 and always had carpet, it's cosier

Um, yes it is a bit grim I'm afraid. He won't be 19 months forever. It won't be long until he growing up and is past the spilling stage (well there will probably always be some spilling I suppose). Also I don't remember my dd having any accidents while potty training. It's not a given.

Maybe put down laminate or wooden floors?

Absolutely do it! There are some fantastic designs and good quality ones about. If you get cushion floor it will be soft and warm and block out some noise too

My friend did it and it looked really nice. Easy to clean and nice and bright. What's the price comparison with laminate? You can put sound proofing under lay down underneath laminate which could be useful.

Wooden or laminate with a large cheap rug?
There was lino on my bedroom floor but that was 40 years ago.

We are moving soon and putting down cushion flooring. Once in, if it feels grim, we can always get a nice big rug.

Why is it grim? There is a whole lot of luxury vinyl available I think you might be remembering the thin plasticky stuff of yesteryear Grin

Neither of mine made a particular mess in their bedroom during potty training.

I think you should do it! It completely depends on the lino too. We have lino in our kitchen and dining room that the previous owners installed and I can't wait to change it. I think it's ugly, shows dirt terribly, has a horrible texture under your feet and just looks old, grim and manky.
However, my friend has just recently had a wood-effect lino installed in her entire house and it is absolutely gorgeous. It looks like wood, feels like wood and even smells like wood! I couldn't believe it when she told me it was lino. It looks beautiful, it's very simple, it brings the whole house together and as she has two littlies under 5 it is the ideal way to keep a clean house.
I'm so jel and can't wait until we can afford to have the same here!
So, in short, I say go for it!

It depends what it looks like. Some is functional and grim, other stuff looks ok.

as long as it is 'lino' and not some cheap old vinyl which emits poisonous fumes. Apparently.

Vinyl these days is a whole different ball game to the stuff from way back, not grim at all.

I'd probably do it, on the proviso of it being something decent quality that looked nice. You can easily add a rug for cosiness, and it can always be changed for carpet once your dc is older.

I don't expect that DS will definitely have accidents in his bedroom but I know that it will bother me if I have to use some noxious crap to get any nasty accidents out of a carpet properly....my mum's cat vomits occasionally in her house and she is always having to use cleaning products that stink to high heaven of all sorts of chemicals

We had vinyl in the entire upstairs of my first house. I miss it so much! So much easier to keep clean with babies and toddlers. The bathroom was so convincing everyone thought it was real tiling. We have carpet upstairs now and my youngest is 7. There are marks Hmm

Wooden floors mean you have to use special oils to maintain and clean right? Sounds a bit of a faff....

it is not grim at all..... ' proper' linoleum comes in loads of colours and designs or you can do your own

Jen we are having wood effect vinyl in our bedroom. But lino appealed to me for DS's room because it's natural
