To put linoleum down in toddler's bedroom?

We're moving into a new house. DS is 19 mo. We were going to put carpet down, but it occurred to me that linoleum would be ideal because it's naturally antibacterial and easy to clean (that's why hospitals have it right?). I am anticipating accidents when we start potty training, and when he spills drinks etc. But is lino a bit grim?

I grew up with Lino in bedrooms! It's what people did back in the 60s before fitted carpets became a "thing".

And if you choose a good quality thick Lino/vinyl with a nice cheerful pattern then I don't see how it can be "grim" Hmm

Real Linoleum is pretty prices though!

JenLindley · 31/07/2016 15:27

I would go for it OP. Its not grim at all. Some fab designs too but I am really motivated by ease of cleaning so maybe not best person to ask.

I'm no expert, but it's either a type of lino or like lino, only a bit more padded! So a bit softer and bouncier (and therefore a bit nicer than hard lino) to sit on/fall on (we also have a toddler).
DH is doing the house up and has put it in one room so far, and it looks good, feels nice underfoot. We have yet to live with it though, so I'm not able to recommend it, twas just a suggestion for something you might want to look into.
We currently have wood or slate in our home and I find it really hard to sit on when I have to sit down and play with them. We do also have those foam floor tiles you can get at ELC. That might be something you want to consider too.

Today's product is niot grim at all, isn't Karndean and Amtico just posh linoleum? I wish I had put it in DDs room, instead she has a ten month old carpet splattered with fake tan and lumps of eyelash glue matted into it.

CantChoose · 31/07/2016 15:30

We have wood effect Lino in our kitchen. It wasn't my idea and I was hugely sceptical but it looks amazing, is really easy to clean and has a nice amount of bounce so the plates don't break if I drop them... Be prepared to pay out for good quality stuff though.

GrassW1dow · 31/07/2016 15:33

I'm talking about lino....

It was others who mentioned vinyl. So I just mentioned that we're having that for our own bedroom. But I would rather lino for DS's bedroom because it's natural (whereas vinyl isn't).

Karen and Amtico is very similar,i think it's great sealed though- pricey!

T0ddlerSlave · 31/07/2016 15:33

You can get carpet you can clean with bleach.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 31/07/2016 15:34

I have wooden flooring,10 years and no up keep other than mopping with a wrung out mop.

Kpo58 · 31/07/2016 15:36

Wouldn't any spillages make the lino very slippery? I fell over in the bathroom of my fil's flat as I couldn't see the wet patch and there was no grip on the flooring.

Smidge001 · 31/07/2016 15:36

I think it's a great idea. My brother put down a squidgy cushioned Lino in the childrens playroom (they're 6 and 5) and it's in a pattern of roads and towns so they can play with toy cars on it. It's great for cleaning up spills or dirt - very useful for kids well after the potty training years!

TheRealAdaLovelace · 31/07/2016 15:36

" You can get carpet you can clean with bleach. "

well that really doesnt sound very healthy for toddlers....

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 31/07/2016 15:38

I have carpet on the stairs that can be scrubbed with bleach, bloody fabulous stuff.

howabout · 31/07/2016 15:42

I vote for lino. I grew up with it in my bedroom and didn't think it grim. Much better if there is any chance of allergies as well as it doesn't hold dust and dust mites like carpet does. Also easier to get a rug if / when you want to change things rather than having to re carpet a whole room.

TheRealAdaLovelace · 31/07/2016 15:42

Dame, the fumes from bleach are poisonous for small children, and give them asthma.

lalalalyra · 31/07/2016 15:47

DS2 has lino in his room. It's fabulous and he loves it (it's like a big road map so he plays with his cars on it for hours). It's not paper thin like lino I remember when I was a kid. Was more expensive than a carpet, but well worth it.

MatildaTheCat · 31/07/2016 15:50

Amtico type flooring is fab and much warmer and softer than wood.

GerdaLovesLili · 31/07/2016 15:54

It's an excellent idea. We used cork flooring with yacht varnish for the same reasons, and now he's older a room-size rug covers most of the floor.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 31/07/2016 15:56

Well yes, but I don't hold my child's head over the carpet when I get the bleach out, I do it when he's not around and I open the windows. A small amount of bleach used to spot clean a carpet is fine, you don't scrub the whole thing with bleach.

Fresta · 31/07/2016 16:12

No need for lino unless you really like it. It's possible to have a toddler and a clean carpet. Mine never peed on their bedroom floor, the potty was in the toilet, and we don't allow drinks in bedrooms except water.

MinniesAndMickeysNeedCounting · 31/07/2016 16:22

Its not grim at all.

Expensive kardean flooring is essentially strips of lino and that's sort after, lino has a bad rep.

MrsTerryPratchett · 31/07/2016 16:27

I'm imaging a marketing meeting at Lino Inc. "Start a thread on MN and we can convince the mummies about lino". Cynical, moi?
