Baby not left in the car

After all these unattended babies in cars today I thought I'd share my story from late last week. There's no AIBU - sorry but as this is where the others are all posted it seemed appropriate.

I was on my way to the supermarket and my 1 year old fell asleep in the car. I'd had an exhausting week and I was getting towards the end of my tether and the sleeping baby was like mana from heaven. I settled down to browse mumsnet on my phone and listen to David Bowie's greatest hits (I must confess I left the engine running so the AC stayed on - it really was very hot outside) and I just enjoyed 10 minutes peace.

Next thing I know there's a security guard peering in through the window - someone had reported DS as an unattended baby in the car and was waving her arms about in an excited way. In fact when I came out of my MN-induced stance I realised a little crowd had gathered to watch the drama of the unattended baby unfold.

I opened the door and thanked them for their concern but explained I was just enjoying the quiet that an unexpected nap brings. I'm glad that there are people looking out for DS but you'd really think she'd have checked the baby actually was unattended before calling security.

I hope this amuses some of you at least!

I know - the engine running, me quietly singing along to 'let's dance' - you'd think someone would have realised I was there.

And I'll have you know I was not in a p&c space - I very sensibly chose a shady space beside a wall to stop the car getting hot preens

I am reasonably small, but not markedly so. No photo snapping as far as I am aware but I wasn't paying any attention to what was happening outside the radius of 50cm of peace around me.

There was no direct interaction with Excited Woman, but the security guard seemed to think it was pretty funny, a few passers by smirked slightly and one even gave me a little smile and wave that left me with the disconcerted feeling that maybe I knew her but couldn't place her

Oh and I can't comment on my car seat- like attire, no idea what I was wearing but perhaps this is the sign I should head over to S&B?

It depends what your car seats are like I suppose? They might be bang on trend for ss16 maybe? I'm no expert in that area myself though. If I matched my car seats I'd be wearing a 16 year old dirty stained grey herringbone jumper with cigarette burns in and faux leather piping 😬

You need a bright yellow security tunic for future "I'm still in the car" scenarios. Add in a day glo orange cap to be safe.

drip feed it was a morrisons, but a naice Morrisons, y'know? Fruit and veg all nicely displayed as you walk in after the flowers.

Also, I don't know that Excited Lady called security, she was just the most likely looking suspect at the time. She was definitely ushering more passers by in our direction though and shouting "someone's left a baby!"

.... If I were to actually abandon DS somewhere (and it has crossed my mind on the odd occasion) a morrisons carpark wouldn't be my first choice. Perhaps the physics dept at our local university in his Star Wars costume?

Or maybe you could get a 'parent on board' sign for the car, just in case you become invisible when you're on mumsnet

Oh dear, it's actually a Star Trek costume. The physicists would beat me up for not knowing the difference before I made my getaway wouldn't they?

MrsKite I actually cannot recall what my car seats look like, that's probably in their favour? Some kind of grey/dark grey pattern that's not intrusive enough to remember. They definitely have yoghurt, banana and baby vomit stains though.

They sound 'classic and understated' maybe?? A bit Autumn/winter. Not that I know much about fashion. I do remember once hoping a lift I was in with baby ds would get stuck so I could lie down in it and go to sleep though

Well Spring/summer they are not! Unless they're springing new life forms.

I know that feeling. I recently played peekaboo whilst lying on the floor and the eyes closed part felt so nice I wanted to drag it out for as long as I could.

Ha, I bet the busy body felt like a right twat!

I once pulled up to a pub ,hot day too. I was a passenger and didn't have my glasses on. As I looked to the car next to us I said "there's a baby in the car , alone!". I quickly jumped out only to realise it was a doll, possibly Baby Annabel.

Thank fuck I didn't over-react and race into the pub!
