AIBU?

Baby not left in the car

After all these unattended babies in cars today I thought I'd share my story from late last week. There's no AIBU - sorry but as this is where the others are all posted it seemed appropriate.

I was on my way to the supermarket and my 1 year old fell asleep in the car. I'd had an exhausting week and I was getting towards the end of my tether and the sleeping baby was like mana from heaven. I settled down to browse mumsnet on my phone and listen to David Bowie's greatest hits (I must confess I left the engine running so the AC stayed on - it really was very hot outside) and I just enjoyed 10 minutes peace.

Next thing I know there's a security guard peering in through the window - someone had reported DS as an unattended baby in the car and was waving her arms about in an excited way. In fact when I came out of my MN-induced stance I realised a little crowd had gathered to watch the drama of the unattended baby unfold.

I opened the door and thanked them for their concern but explained I was just enjoying the quiet that an unexpected nap brings. I'm glad that there are people looking out for DS but you'd really think she'd have checked the baby actually was unattended before calling security. Grin

I hope this amuses some of you at least!

:)

Are you windows tinted so she could see DS but not you because of angle?

Unexpected naps, like manna from heaven.

I know you've all been on tenterhooks so I made special note of my car seat design this morning. Dark grey with small slightly lighter grey squares all over. They have a pleasing slightly 3D effect. Do you think boden have a dress with a similar design? Might be useful for espionage etc.

I will of course be donning my high-vis and safety hat as suggested by a pp whenever I am off duty as a sleuth.

MrsDV, I may well have had cake smeared around my face like my toddler, that's entirely plausible.

And no-tinted Windows, blinds or reflective sun protector thing (I haven't seen one of those for years!)

MsKite when I was younger and less well advised, I did actually have (and wear!!) a rather fetching grey herringbone playsuit all in one type thing with faux leather piping! I looked like a cross between something out of Star Trek and your nan's old sofa. Fortunately no stains or cigarette burns though!!

I am amazed I wasn't flamed for that actually, allegretto. I did feel slightly guilty as I normally wouldn't leave the engine idling (in the same way I drive instead of using public transport but bought the Eco version of the car I wanted to make myself feel better about it) but it really was an A/C and David Bowie kind of day.

Well it was good of the lady to be concerned but I bet she slunk away guiltily and felt mighty embarrassed at all the fuss she'd caused over nothing.
Bet she doesn't show her face there and shops elsewhere now.

Do you think she thought you were trying to commit suicide but failed to notice there was no hosepipe attached to the exhaust?

I once did a supermarket shop, put baby DD in her car seat, loaded the shopping in the boot and went to take the trolley back. The trolley park was in the next row of spaces, probably about 10m away from the car so apart from the spilt second when I was getting my pound back I was literally watching the car the whole time. In that second, though, a woman walking past my car clocked DD and GLARED at me. She obviously assumed I'd left her in there while I was doing my whole shop, and no doubt had fun telling everyone about the scandalously neglectful parent she'd seen that day.

Nope, it's definitely Star Trek. Blue and black with the little logo on. I think the physicists would take him in as one of their own and nurture him into a genius.

My first thought - if that had happened to me and the commotion had woken up DS, I would have been apoplectic AngryGrin

I doubt Excited Lady slunk off in shame, she sounds the type to love all the attention and is probably back there today looking for her next victim.

ChickyDuck just laughed out loud at your play suit matching my car seats. Maybe I could get one though and attract the attention of a busy body 🤔

Love this. Majorly love the Star Trek costume :) (Googles for Star Trek costumes age 2 - 3)

I also did not abandon my toddler in the playground last week. She was in a tunnel thing that had a balance board thing, that went over a rope net and mesh. She was using the net as a commando crawl activity, I was approximately 2 feet away at the end of the tunnel. Her foot got a bit tangled but she was valiantly untangling it, not in the least upset. Some lady came swooping down and grabbed her, lifted her right out exclaiming "poor thing, you're stuck, where is your mummy??!!" From 2 feet away I was like Confused 'right here'? She's lucky DD didn't clobber her, she doesn't like (a) to be interrupted when busy (b) strangers touching her (c) almost anyone touching her actually.

But I suppose it's better that people care Grin
