Dd1 needs braces. She has been assessed by an orthodontist etc and had xrays last week to check whether or not there was a molar under her final baby tooth which there is thankfully. Ortho called earlier and said she was referring her back to dentist to have the last baby tooth pulled, I've said I want it to come out itself as it's already wobbly and the next ortho appointment isn't for a year.

AIBU? As I'm now doubting myself!

You could give it a while but I ended up having mine pulled as they sort of got wedged in. Took all of 5mins :-)

Why do you want it to come out naturally? It'll only be a quick tweak from the dentist to pull it and the Orthodontist obviously wants it out sooner rather than later.

If that is what the ortho is recommending then I would be inclined to think that it really is in your DD's best interest. Perhaps the ortho has a specific reason, perhaps you could ask her?

I just felt that rather than put dd through an unnecessary procedure seeing as the tooth is already wobbly and she isn't seeing the ortho until next july/August anyway then that would be a better option.

It was the orthodontist that I spoke to and she didn't say anything to dissuade me and said she'd see dd next year so I assume there isn't a specific reason or she would have said?

I'd go with the ortho's recommendation to have it pulled. Ime molars can be wobbly for months before they finally come out by themselves and the new ones can take months to fully come through. The ortho probably wants to make sure the new tooth is fully through before the next appointment.

My son had to get one pulled. They left it 6 months and it showed no sign of moving then it took another 3 or 4 months for the adult tooth to come through.

Professional opinion here.
They want it taking out so permanent tooth can errupt as fully as possible before next appt. So they can look into getting trmt started asap. It can take ages for a tooth to actually drop out from when it starts wobbling, then you have to wait for tooth to come through which again can take years, better to get it done so no delays. How old is DD?

My last baby tooth wouldn't come out naturally & I was mid teens when it was pulled. As a result the adult tooth was too soft & I still have ongoing problems with only that tooth. I'm sure the orthodontist has the childs best interests in mind

She's 12 next month.

I will give a call back tomorrow and see if ortho is happy for me to wait then.

Just get it pulled. I had 4 adult teeth extracted same age due to crowded mouth before I had braces. You want braces on sooner rather than later

I don't understand this answer. Everyone including a professional has advised you to get the tooth pulled but you are still going to ask the ortho if you can wait????

I had four baby teeth extracted for the purposes of a brace. Then again, I was 16 so they really should've fallen out themselves. Get them removed, OP.

I'm 35 and one of men is firmly wedged in place. Dentist mentions it every time I go; he's practically foaming at the mouth at the thought of getting rid. I'm keeping him forever. Sometimes they really just don't want to come out, though.

Yes Persian how odd that she would discuss it further with the health care professional treating DD rather than do as directed by the MN massive. How very dare she!!

They don't always fall out neatly. DD had baby tooth that wobbled so much we had a look as it should have been out the length of time it took and she was in so much pain. Her new tooth was growing up under the old tooth and they had stuck together, so dentist had to sort that out.

I'd get the tooth pulled as advised.

At 12, I'd have it taken out.
Depending on the complexity of her case she could have braces on for a lengthy course of trmt. You want to get this underway as soon as appropriate not delayed waiting for teeth to errupt. Take the orthodontists advice and get it removed. It will just involve a local anaesthetic and a little wiggle, not a complex procedure and at 12 she's old enough to understand and be compliant. Honestly its no biggy.

The OP then came here looking for advice and every single person including a professional advised her to get it removed.

It is pretty unlikely that the ortho will change her recommendation but I suppose the OP wants to be certain about the course of action.

However it is the removal of an already wobbly baby tooth, not something more substantial.

I would get it pulled. Braces take long enough without possibly holding up treatment. It took me a year from first consultation after being referred to actually getting the brace on and that was with records appointments etc in between.

Spoke to orthodontist today - we are going to push ahead with the extraction.

I have a major fear of the dentist after a bad extraction as a child so that is definately clouding my judgement on this.

Thank you for all of the advice Smile and hopefully this time next year dd will be sporting some braces Grin

Now I understand why you were so against it. Honestly if the tooth is already wobbly it will be easy to remove.
