Driving lessons and air con aibu?

kiki22 · 19/07/2016 22:44

I'm doing a crash course this week of 3 hours a day today was day 2. I'm 34 weeks pregnant and have been really feeling the heat by the time my lesson was over today I had drank 2 bottles of water and my clothes where soaked with sweat yesterday wasn't as warm but similar. I asked to have air con on for a while and the instructor said no he doesn't use it, at this point I was dripping with sweat as we were doing through maneuvers so no breeze coming in. Both days I've had to cut the lesson short (on his suggestion) by an hour as I was starting to feel ill he has refunded me the hour though.

Aibu to expect he puts the air con on for a while? I know it uses fuel but I'm finding it so difficult to relax and concentrate when I'm feeling over heated and sitting in wet clothes. I have my test at the weekend which I really need to be in the best position possible to pass for personal reasons I'm worried between the heat, the discomfort and cutting lessons short this will not happen.

I don't think you're being unreasonable, especially today. Perhaps offer him a few pounds extra for its use. Is it money that is definitely his motivation for saying no?

Bottomchops · 19/07/2016 22:51

YANBU! What a bastard!!! 1. It's a bloody heatwave. 2. You're bloody pregnant in a heatwave.

Onesieisthequeensselfie · 19/07/2016 22:52

WHAAAT??? Confused
Yanbu!

ijustwannadance · 19/07/2016 22:53

What an absolute idiot. It's bad enough him being such a tightwad, but to let a heavily pregnant woman become so uncomfortable is absurd.

MyMurphy · 19/07/2016 22:56

WTF ! What is the point of air con if he doesn't use it? What a knob! i would be complaining again and again till I had all my money refunded!

Champagneformyrealfriends · 19/07/2016 22:58

It doesn't use that much fuel depending on the car. What a dick. Yanbu.

Bottomchops · 19/07/2016 22:58

You may as well cancel tomorrow too. I'd be ringing him in the morning.

Champagneformyrealfriends · 19/07/2016 22:59

What car is it?

Maisy313 · 19/07/2016 23:01

He sounds like a total dick! Yanbu - I had a teacher that used to get the worst student in the world to drive me home at the end of my lesson emergency breaking all the way (I passed my test a week before ds2 was born)

WaitrosePigeon · 19/07/2016 23:02

I'd be cancelling his services and be telling him why.

kiki22 · 19/07/2016 23:02

It's a corsa. I'm thinking I need to just put my foot down and tell him I need it I'm willing to give some extra for it. I can't really cancel as my test is booked and can't be cancelled/changed at this point I would lose money and have to wait possibly months for another, I really need to be driving asap.

I absolutely agree with the sympathy for you being pregnant in this heat!

But I am not sure he's being such a dick. Especially if he refunded you money for a lesson you cut short - that seems like someone being decent, since he could have charged you.

So I wonder if perhaps he doesn't realise how much of an issue this is? Maybe if you were to say to him that, as you are pregnant, you are really struggling and the aircon would make a big difference? After all, I am sure he would rather earn the money for the hour, than refund you again.

I could imagine him saying 'oh, I don't use it' without reflecting much, especially if he's not seen someone go through a pregnancy before.

VimFuego101 · 19/07/2016 23:03

Bollocks to paying extra! He should put it on without being a knob about it.

minatiae · 19/07/2016 23:03

yanbu who doesn't use AC??

SortAllTheThings · 19/07/2016 23:06

What a shit head. Turn it on, and if he birches just ask him if he's seriously going to let a heavily pregnant women swelter in this heat?

Is it a company or a private one?

DeadGood · 19/07/2016 23:06

" asked to have air con on for a while and the instructor said no he doesn't use it"

Eurgh HIBmassivelyU just for that! "No, I don't use it." How rude! You don't have to use it yourself but you damn well should when you have paying students in your car...

Witchend · 19/07/2016 23:07

If he doesn't use the air conditioning then he probably doesn't have it filled up and ready to work. We don't bother about filling it up as we decided we wouldn't use it.
If you offer to pay for it to be filled up then that's reasonable.

Alibobbob · 19/07/2016 23:09

Are the windows open? If not can you open the windows? Even the widows in the back would help.

Is there an option to take the lessons of an evening when it's cooler or have an hour's break in the middle of the day?

Good luck for your test (and put the air on on whilst taking the test).

emwithme · 19/07/2016 23:11

WTF? DH and I have two cars. I arrived home just as he was leaving earlier. He took my car (which had had the aircon running for 45 minutes so was nice and cool) so he didn't have to wait for his car (which had had a ten minute blast of aircon 90 minutes earlier) to cool down.

I did contemplate just going to the car earlier to sit with the engine running so the aircon would cool me down a bit...and I'm not pregnant.

Birdsgottafly · 19/07/2016 23:11

Surely he's Self Employed and as such there is a certain amount of tax deduction, he can claim, for running costs?

His unreasonableness is making you finish the lessons early, so he needs to work out a way that this won't happen. Which is using a facility that the Car has, "Climate Control".

He's being an Arsehole and owes you time/lessons and the cost of a test, if he can't fulfill his part of the contract.

Duck90 · 19/07/2016 23:13

Can you just not ask him what the issue is? He refunded an hours lesson, he can't be to worried about money. Maybe his air con is rubbish and knows you won't be comfortable in this heat.

NeedsAsockamnesty · 19/07/2016 23:14

Would I arse offer him extra money for its use.

acasualobserver · 19/07/2016 23:15

God, how weird. Why have it and not use it? He must have a reason - even a bonkers one. My Grandpa wouldn't get a colour TV because "they caught fire".

Duck90 · 19/07/2016 23:16

To add, driving instructors like a good pass rate. I can't understand that he would cut your lessons short before your test, just because of air con.

kiki22 · 19/07/2016 23:18

The windows are open so OK for going at speed but the area the test centre is in is mainly a 30 zone plus stopping regularly for maneuvers so it is getting hot fast. He has said I few times about his wife being pregnant (3 adult children) so he seems to have some idea I do keep saying how hot I am and it's effecting my concentration he makes sympathetic noises but thats about it.

Whatever his reasons are the website says air conditioned cars so I would expect it to be part of the service if need be. It's due to rain all day tomorrow while being warm so it's going to be awful if we can't open windows Sad
