To complain to school?

Son was to do PE at peak heat outside yesterday followed by lessons outside. Came home with heatstroke. Aibu to complain that school should have kept children cool and out of sun. I sent him with hat, water and creamed but it didn't prevent this.

I would say something to the school. It was so hot yesterday.

I'm not sure you need a dr to diagnose heat stroke? I thought it's just sickness, over heating etc? I might be wrong though as I have never had it

I did. He has high temperature which reduced with cool wet towels, fatigue, flushed, leg cramps and dark urine, headache and mild nausea.

Schools in the UK really need to get the message about sun, heat and UV. Hell, not just schools but people. You can guarantee there will be people sunbathing outside at lunch today. Hopefully they will have protection on but I don't understand the need for a tan. It's a great way to get skin cancer.

Pupils (and staff) need to be kept sun safe - and people in the school need to ensure that other staff members are being safe as well.

So yes, complain. Ask them if this was a good idea and what cautions they are taking today..

Sounds like hear exhaustion rather than heat stroke although heat exhaustion can lead to heat stroke if untreated

How old is he? Is he old enough to know he needs to drink more in this weather and seek shade? If we're talking about 5 year olds that's very different to 15 year olds

OP has not mentioned where they are. UK is not the only place where it was sunny yesterday.

He got a bit hot. You may have sent him with water, hat and cream. whether he used them or not who knows.

Do you think it's ok to have outdoor PE and then outdoor lessons on what was the hottest day of the year and then you'll blame the pupils when they get ill?

So if your child came home ill because the school had put them in danger, you wouldn't raise concerns and would call anyone who did complain a fusspot Hmm

I dont think she is being a fusspot. My kids are in secondary now but always amazed me when they were in primary and I would pass teh school to see children doing PE in the full glare of the afternoon sun mostly without sunhats (even though they were made to wear them at break and lunch!) and suncream completely ineffective if applied before they go to school in teh morning. It is crazy to have them out doing PE in the full sum in this sort of weather. Its double standards on the part of primary schools to do this as they always bang on (quite rightly) about hats and cream. End of rant. i'm with you OP complain to the school

UK schools should have a sun policy and be aware of the effects of the sun - and children and staff should not be afraid to raise concerns.

No wonder we have a massive increase in skin cancer in this country. But hey, it's only us 'fusspots' who are worried about it.

Dd's high school has sports day today -they are all supposed to be out on the field all day -there is 1 tree and 300 yr 7s

I'm praying they cancel but have sent dd with 2 ltrs of water and she creamed up with 8hr stuff before she left

Well I wonder how I survived a British childhood without sunhats, factor 3000 and the insistence I drank 12 litres of water every day at 5 minute intervals.

Being out in the heat too long makes me ill. Not a bit hot but properly poorly. It happens to lots of people and children shouldn't be outside for prolonged periods. We aren't used to it in this country. And indeed in many countries with serious heat the streets are empty at the height of the heat.

I would talk to school. I know it's nice weather but outdoor lessons should be shades. Being in direct sun just is t a good idea.

Probably with an increased risk of skin cancer as you get older.

We are more sun aware now. Just like with smoking etc.

Isn't heatstroke a serious medical condition that needs urgent attention? Different to heat exhaustion.

And a 6yr old is very unlikely to raise concerns..

Please speak to the school. Ask them what their sun safe policy is. I bet they haven't got one.

Are they children or dogs? If children I don't see that having 1 tree is a problem.
