To both attend DCs first day of school?

We both did for the older two and plan to for dc3 in September.

It's obviously not that common judging by the other parents doing a solo drop off and pick up. It's always been quite a momentous occasion for us and I just wondered if it's seen as a bit odd or overkill?

What do you think? AWBU?

If you can both be there fine. If not also fine. Just do what works for your family.

By the time DD's 'first day at school' came around she'd already been going to the attached pre-school for nearly a year. Some kids in her class had spent almost 2 years full time in pre-school by then. Plus there was the welcome mornings and the full day in the summer term.

I think I'd been to school once before when I started reception, it was a much bigger occasion then.

DH happened to have a day off on DDs first day in pre-school, so we both dropped her off, but he was working for her first day in reception.

Oh, and I've no idea if my dad came with me on my first day at school, I can't remember! So it possibly doesn't matter either way.

Oh well then. We were total overkill. We had me, dh, all 4 gps and my dsis. She's nearly 16 now and dont think we've damaged her!!
We weren't the only family like that eitherGrin

We did, for all three kids. We weren't the only ones by any means.

We didn't but lots did when mine started school. I did Hmma bit at the ones who turned up with both parents, 2 sets of grandparents and their second cousin twice removed though. It was a phased start so their first "day" was only actually 2 hours!

If every child does this that makes aprox 92 people in a classroom - including teacher and TA.

Some do, some don't, neither way is the right way - do what suits you and your dcs.

No point at DTs school - you hand them over at the gate to the year 6 guardian who takes them in. Perfect way to do it IMO to prevent all the parent smiling around.

If it works for you though, do it!

Both of us took our daughter and plan to take our son in sept. My husband is lucky enough to be flexible with his hours and will simply go in late. As with my daughter I've managed to change my work hours to spread across 5 days for the month of September so I can take and pick up each day for the first month, then it's over to grandma. I have horrible working mum guilt all the time, despite loving my job, so I try to attend these firsts/occasions if I possibly can. I'm very much in the whatever suits you camp

We were both there for DD. She ran off with her guardian without a backward glance bless her.

My parents have cine film of my first day 40 years ago odd. They are all dressed up in suit and best dress, so it was a big day back then too, at least in our family

Kid is proud to his new uniform, proud to be with both parents, I don't think that's overkill at all. The first day is normally fine, I would prefer if we could both do the drop off the following days when mine tend to decide they had enough of the school now!

Do what you want to do.

DH has always taken the children for their first day at secondary school as I'm busy with the younger one/s. This September my youngest is starting at secondary so I could take them but DH will still do it. Tradition and being fair but I have said to DC it is their choice.

I'm hoping my husband can do first-day with me. He used to work away so missed a lot of "firsts."

I'm still amazed at all the partners that turn up for sports day, special assemblies, new patents info etc.
