Only Invited to the Evening Do...

Not a wedding, but a christening.

My cousin has invited us to her DD's christening, but it's an evening only invite. I don't really mind (saves me having to keep DS quiet through the ceremony) but I've never heard of this before. Is that a thing now?

AIBU to think it a bit unusual!

Ive never heard of that. I thought Christenings generally took place around lunchtime, after a church service, and went on till around tea time.

Never heard of that in my life! Christenings are usually strictly daytime affairs. Clearly this one is being run more as a wedding.

I have never heard of this either. I haven't been to many Christenings but they have always been in the afternoon and everyone goes home by early evening.

Never heard of this, Christenings take place usually around lunchtime or in the afternoon, and then a celebration afterwards usually in the house or hall.

That's weird. The whole point of the christening is the ceremony, I've never been to one that had an after party that was more than tea and sandwiches.

I've never heard of it, but I kind of like the idea! I went to a christening this afternoon and my husband and I spent the entire time trying to keep our twins quiet, yet occupied. Would have loved to just go to the bit afterwards.

When my brother made his communion a few years ago the invite was to the chapel and then on for a meal/party. My mum did tell everyone they were more than welcome to join after and skip the chapel part as seating was very limited and only one pew per child. We didn't go to the chapel (three young kids who wouldn't enjoy standing for over an hour). Is it like that?

They could just do a naming party, why do people who do Christenings for non Christian reasons not think of that?

Every Christening/Baptism I've been to, has either been during a church service, or just afterwards. Either way, they can't stop you from going.

And an evening thing is weird too, as you'd expect the baby to be at least sleepy, if not asleep in bed or the pram.

The party time are 5-9pm. I don't know when the Christening is, but I suppose (now I think of it) it would be during the service. Maybe they wanted both ceremony and party and decided to do them on the same day.

It's a logistical nightmare!

Never heard of it. Either it's OTT or it's nice of them to ask you to a sensibly-timed party. The last few christenings we've been invited to were 9.00am ish on a Sunday morning. Far too early for us!

Ditto, garlic, if our dd had been christened we'd have used it as an excuse for a party! But neither of us is at all religious and the hatch/match/despatch life events that many (most?) 'Christians' restrict themselves to seems hypocritical to me. Our wedding was reg office and (naice) pub piss up with casino tables and dancing, which was much more fun for us than a church thing.

We got invited to the evening do of a communion. I'm so thick I assumed it included going to the church as again I'd never heard of not going to the church so we turned up. Lol awkward !!!
