To think this is a pretty shit lunch from school

DD is reception age and went on a school trip to the zoo today, they then went straight from their school trip to the disco, so she didn't get home until 6:30 - a pretty long day for a 5 year old

She's on school dinners so we were told the school would provide her packed lunch
She was given -
1/2 a tuna sandwich (2 pieces of bread to make a sandwich, cut into 4 triangles and each child given 2 triangles)
And a biscuit

So she went from 8:30 - 6pm, walking round a zoo and running round the disco, on 1/2 a sandwich and a biscuit Hmm

AIBU to think the school were taking the piss with this excuse of a lunch? The poor kid is ravenous now!

That is shit! What if any of the kids were vegetarian, would they just get a biscuit? !

Oh no she chose the filling, it was a choice between tuna, cheese or egg

Are you sure that's all they were given? Or was it all she chose to eat from what was provided?

Ds went in a school trip yesterday and they had a barmcake, a biscuit, small bag of raisins, piece of fruit and a bottle of water. Plenty for the day imo.

Sirzy that was my first thought too but I asked her a few times and I ran through a few foods I thought they might offer asking if she was offered anything
She's adamant that that's all they were offered

I helped on a school trip this week. It was what you have said with a piece of fruit. Yanbu .

Of course it's a shit lunch if that's actually all they were given. But I'm sure it's not. What about a drink?

That's astonishingly small. DS would resort to cannibalism if that was all he was offered all day Grin

Our packed lunches at secondary are a baguette with filling, crisps, fruit and muffin. They don't tend to be popular. When DS had his trip, I made him his own lunch so I knew he'd have enough. He usually has school dinners.

I wonder if there was more but she chose not to eat it then.

I know the packed lunches our school provide have more then that in them. But the kids don't all eat it all.

I believe what DD says, she's not a liar, and not sure what she's get out of lying about this?
She didn't tell me in a "all we got was this and I'm starving give me sweets" kind of way, just casually asking about her day and I happened to ask what was for lunch and this was what they had

It does sound a bit small. Did the disco run from 3 til 6.30? That's very long! Our usually starts about 4.30 so kids can go home eat and get changed first.

That's pretty poor, my child got a ham roll, fruit, cake, juice and something else that I've forgotten. My year R child can easily eat a 2-slice sandwich now.

Discos are usually 3:30-5 for the younger ones, so they get changed at school
But because reception wasn't getting back from the trip till 4ish the disco ran from 4:30-6 today, so they got changed in school as soon as they got back from the zoo

She did get a bag of haribo at the disco, forgot about that

I'd check the facts before worrying too much. I'd guess that your DD has forgotten something as it is very unlikely that that would be all they were offered.

I do catering in a high school; kids who get free dinners are entitled to a free packed lunch, the kids who pay can preorder one too.
The secondary school one is a sandwich (2 slices bread, choice of filling) a drink, a biscuit or slice of traybake, and a piece of fruit. As far as I remember the primary one is the same, although the biscuit item may be a smaller shortie type thing.

They are usually encouraged to take the snack they would normally have at playtime/break (juice & fruit, crisps or breakfast bar etc) to eat when they get there.

If the disco was an event that most/all of the kids on the trip were going to, I'd be surprised if supplying an extra snack for between times wasn't suggested. To be honest, if it was my kid and I knew they were going to be out and about that long, I'd have slipped something in her pocket for between times.

Could there have been refreshments at the disco but she just didn't take any?

I helped out on a year 6 trip once, and one of the boys had a free school lunch and it was tiny, a small ham roll a biscuit and a small carton of juice. Now this was for a big 11 year old boy he was famished I had to borrow some cash off a teacher to buy him some extra
