DD is reception age and went on a school trip to the zoo today, they then went straight from their school trip to the disco, so she didn't get home until 6:30 - a pretty long day for a 5 year old

She's on school dinners so we were told the school would provide her packed lunch
She was given -
1/2 a tuna sandwich (2 pieces of bread to make a sandwich, cut into 4 triangles and each child given 2 triangles)
And a biscuit

So she went from 8:30 - 6pm, walking round a zoo and running round the disco, on 1/2 a sandwich and a biscuit Hmm

AIBU to think the school were taking the piss with this excuse of a lunch? The poor kid is ravenous now!

I think this seems worse than it really is because of the disco. The packed lunch wasn't supposed to last until 6.00, and although I agree lunchwas on the small side, if it had beena normal pick up time it would have been ok.

I don't think that is enough food either for a full day. Your poor dd (and the other kids) must have been starving.

Can I ask, do you pay for her school meals?

Report
dungandbother · 08/07/2016 21:02

School meals are free in KS1. So I doubt the Op paid

Report
NoCapes · 08/07/2016 21:04

No They as dung said, all of the kids up to year 3 get a free school meal

Oh okay, I don't mean this in an offence way, but you can't really complain the lunch was free so you shouldn't have really expected much, next time she goes on a school trip you should send her with a packed lunch from home for a peace of mind.

our free school meals packed lunches are
a sandwich, a cookie or similar, fruit and a bottle of water

What?!
She gets a free lunch every day, so should I expect that she isn't ever being fed adequately?! I didn't decide that she got free school meals, the government did, if they can't afford to feed the children then someone with the power to should stop it. The kids shouldn't pay the price in hunger! How ridiculous!

When I'm told my child is being given lunch I expect them to be given lunch, not a snack - so yes, I can complain!

It seems really bad planning to have a school trip and a school disco on the same day.

Totally agree Hobbes there were some tired little faces coming out of school tonight

It's shit, it's only one lunch out of 365 in the year. She won't die of hunger.

Far too much going on for such small children in one day, with a big trip and a school disco after. Far too little food to go so long on too!

Does she get such a small lunch every day, NoCapes? My DD is just looking into the free "nutritious" school meals and can't believe just how unhealthy they are. She asked about giving her DD a packed lunch on the worst days but was told it is all or nothing Confused Having worked in a Primary School myself, I can't say that they are ever particularly filling or healthy but as the day was going to be particularly long for such a small child, you'd have thought a letter home suggesting bringing a snack for after the trip would have been a good idea.

YANBU! Schools are warped when it comes to lunches. I was called into School because my DD's lunch was too small when she was in year 5. She had an oven bottom roll butty, fruit, cereal bar and a drink. I was told by the very snotty new HT that the Dinner lady had been 'keeping an eye' on her lunches as she felt she was under fed at lunchtime. To be fair DD always ate everything so I felt horrendous obvs and upped her lunch. I started adding a handful of cherry tomatoes and a few cheddars. Every day for 2 weeks the roll came back with 1 bite out of it and everything else eaten. I saved every roll and offered them to the head in a carrier bag. "What's this?" she said with a warm 'oh for me?' smile.' "Yep" I said as she peered in the bag I said "these are all the sandwiches DD has wasted since you advised me to put more food in her lunch box. So I think I'll go back to giving her just the right amount of food for her appetite." Turned on my heel and sashayed off.

Our school packed lunches for trips are a (whole) sandwich, apple, and a carton of juice. Its not enough, they're always starving by the time we get to the destination, and lunch is usually straightaway ( could be as early as 11). So most parents send extra, plus 2 bottles of water. They need extra at lunchtime, plus something for trip home- cereal bar or similar.

Our year 2 trip to brighton the children got sandwiches from 2 slices of bread, an apple, a biscuit and some carrot and cucumber sticks plus water. I did give them plain crisps as an extra.

I don;t think she is lying. But I wouldn't believe her iyswim?
Often kids will tell you what they believe to be the truth, but it isn't the whole truth. You see/hear many many stories of children saying things like "we were kept inside for lunch" when what happened was they were kept in for a few minutes

.
I'd ask the school what was provided.

TheyOnce it was in lieu of the lunch she would've had if she'd been on the school premises, of course it should've been adequate.

If a KS2 child was receiving FSM would you expect them to have less on their plate than the child whose parents have paid for theirs? That's one of the reasons FSM were introduced, to ensure all children stood a chance of being fed well and equally at school regardless of their parents ability to pay. To suggest OP's DD should basically be grateful for practically bugger all because it was free is a really crap attitude to take.

I would raise it with school op. Our school trip lunches used to be good in KS1. Since we changed lunch providers the packed lunches are tiny as you describe. 1 small sandwich, small biscuit (shortbread or oat biscuit) and a bottle of water.

We teachers gathered as much spare fruit as we could from school to fill the bags up and shared our own lunches with the children on our last trip because the children were hungry! I'm amazed parents haven't complained about them tbh.
