to think DD needs an x-ray

DD was kicked over on Tuesday and has hurt her arm. I iced it after school. DD said she felt dizzy and her vision went all dark just after it happened. It's not swollen or bruised but she has been complaining that it hurts. DP thinks she's putting it on because it doesn't look fractured and she can move it/bend it. But she is going out of her way to not lean on it, has been holding it up to support it and was in tears on the way home today because it hurts. And DD really doesn't want to go to the hospital or end up in a cast and tells me "I'm not going to hospital!" I've told DP that I think it needs x-raying but am second guessing myself. Is it likely to be fractured even though it looks normal? Aibu to think it needs to be x-rayed?

Some years ago my dd's friend was at my house and was pushing a bike (she wasn't even on it) and fell over on top of the bike. She complained that her arm was hurting afterwards, but continued to play, slightly favoring the arm. I called the mom who said not to worry about it. The next day when the girl went home, her mom decided to take her to the hospital to have the arm looked at and it turned out it was fractured in two places.
Moral of the story is that you really can't tell. You should take your dd to have it xrayed.

I would get a X-ray, at least it would ease your mind.

Just because she can bend it or use it doesn't mean she hasn't broken it. Get it checked.

My DD broke her arm when she was 5. Fell off the climbing frame at school, so they rang and said it looked ok and she could still move it etc but best to get it checked out with an X-Ray.

I took her to A&E for said X-Ray and felt a complete fraud as we sat in the waiting room me I watched doing handstands and cartwheels. She went in for the X-Ray whilst I apologized for wasting their time etc. And 5 mins later was called in to be told that she had indeed fractured her arm and the fracture was 3/4 through the width of the bone Shock. I had nightmares for ages about what could have happened whilst she was doing handstands

So, to answer your question, yes - get it X rated!

My son had a completely
innocuous fall in our back garden and cryed a bit, but was fine afterwards. He complained of it being a bit sore and held it occasionally for the next day or so. He could still bend it/move all his fingers etc. I thought I'd be better safe than sorry so took him for an X-ray. He was leaping around the waiting room at a &e, vaulting on to chairs, showing no sign of pain. As it turns out 2 bones were fractured. I felt awful. Would encourage you to go just in case. No harm done if it's not broken.

My sister has broke one arm twice and the other once.

She was able to use it before casting it too. So yes do X-Ray it

This is what I was thinking. DD got pushed into a wall today which she says has made it feel worse. I keep having visions of what could happen if we leave it and already know I'm going to feel guilty af if they tell me it's fractured because DP keeps telling me I'm worrying about nothing and no need to go get it checked. I will take her to get it looked at.

Last year at camp, DD had what seemed like a minor fall. She mentioned a couple of times that it was uncomfortable, but still participated. 3 days later, we got a call from the camp suggesting that we might want to take hwr for x-rays as it was "a bit swollen and bruised".

It looked awful and turns out that she has broken her humerus (upper arm) clean in 2. Required surgery for repair.

Better safe than sorry... take her and get it x-rayed.

Trust your instinct and get it checked. My DD broke her arm when she was 9. She could move it, bend it, wiggle her fingers, wasn't in a lot of pain etc and it was 3 days later that she said it felt "funny" and when we went to have it checked it was fractured.

Hopefully you're there now anyway, but just another to say take her. My dsis walked around for 4 days with a broken arm.

The only way to be sure is to x-Ray it.

Definitely get it x-rayed.
I broke my arm when I was 11 and also nearly passed out when I did it which is how I knew it was broken.
My arm didn't swell, could still use it, teacher was convinced I was fine but phoned my dad to pick me up anyway. I had a cast up to my shoulder for weeks!

My eldest dd who was 3 at the time fell on open hands, she screamed (she is very dramatic with just a scrape) and it looked fine and she could even move it around fine to.
The only thing that concerned me was the fact she fell asleep straight after (never does this) and this worried me.
So I took her to a&e were she had infact fractured her elbow.
Ended up with a cast on for a good few weeks .
Even my son who discolated and broke his ankle in 4 places could move it!
So really annoys me when people say "its fine you can move it!" That is total bull.
If your worried get it looked at.

Im another one saying, yes definitely get it checked. My DS hurt his foot and I thought he was being over dramatic (it wasn't particularly swollen either) but took him to the hospital anyway and yes, it was a "beckham" break.

Two questions:
Do you Have a degree in how to sort out broken bones?
Do you have X-ray vision?

Do the maths.

A child avoiding using a limb is not putting it on. If I had to put money on it, I'd bet you a tenner it's broken.

Can you not go to out of hours? Ours has an X-ray and can put a temporary cast on.

The description of feeling dizzy and seeing black when she did it was exactly how I felt when I broke my arm aged 15.

Definitely get it checked out.

Radiographer here . Take her to A&E.
It's a myth that just because you can wiggle your fingers means it's not broken . A limb doesn't have to 'look' broken for it to be broken.

Also , don't want to scare you but it raises red flags if parents delay taking their children to A&E and a fracture is discovered
