To be really noisy as I leave the house

Every night without fail my neighbours stand at their front door (under my bedroom window) chatting really loudly to their adult dc until gone midnight.

So I've decided it's time for payback as I've tried asking them nicely. I've asked the dc to make a racket as they leave and I fully intend to do the same. Yes I am fully aware I'm being petty

Cold do what the neighbours do round here, pa slam the windows shut.
Admittedly it has seemed to have worked for the weed smoker next door!

MidniteScribbler · 05/07/2016 07:48

Isn't it time to bring back the good old fashioned tradition of emptying the chamber pot out the window?

Why not go down to where they are one night and say pleasantly- " Hi, I'm sure you don't realise but the sound of you talking really carries and it's keeping me and the kids awake, would you mind chatting inside please?"

They probably have no idea.

Rosa · 05/07/2016 07:58

Ring the doorbell and run away

ijustwannadance · 05/07/2016 08:00

Why are they outside? Smoking?
People don't realise how loud they are. Especially when there is no other background noise.

whois · 05/07/2016 08:00

They probably have no idea.

OP says she has asked nicely.

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 05/07/2016 08:01

OP Has already asked them to be quiet so they clearly "have an idea"
Go for it OP we live in a student area and have taken similar measures periodically Grin

GnomeDePlume · 05/07/2016 08:08

If you do it then you have lost any moral high ground.

HopeArden · 05/07/2016 08:10

Moral high ground is overrated. Do it!

I was once kept awake until 3am by students in a first floor flat up the road playing loud music.

When I left for work at 7 am I leant on the doorbell until one of them opened the window and then politely informed them that I was off to work. They never did it again.

OrangeSquashTallGlass · 05/07/2016 08:20

Nishky I've done something very similar. Upstairs neighbours were playing the keyboard myheartwillgoon until stupid o'clock. When I left for work at 6:30pm I held the buzzer to their flat down for a loooonnnggg time, then calmly walked away. It. Felt. So. Good.

OrangeSquashTallGlass · 05/07/2016 08:21

6:30am

RiverTam · 05/07/2016 08:24

Damn, I wish I'd done what Nishky did when I lived about a flat where they were forever doing this. I ranted and raged at them instead and unsurprisingly they never stopped!

ParadiseCity · 05/07/2016 08:30

TattyCat can you hear yourself? WTF? They're a certain nationality so they have a different bodyclock?!

TattyCat · 05/07/2016 08:36

ParadiseCity

Hmm
VioletBam · 05/07/2016 08:39

My very posh, quite elderly neighbours do the same three nights a week OP. It drives me MAD.

They live over the road and it's a wide road but still, they stand yelling goodbye to their many dinner guests who all drive off beeping the bastard horns on their stupid, showy cars!

We're not posh or rich like them so we don't have 3 fucking dinner parties a week and they're SELFISH even if they are rich and posh.

SO YANBU!

Creampastry · 05/07/2016 08:41

Wouldn't it be really funny if your dc played the recorder outside....

Asprilla11 · 05/07/2016 08:47

Diarrhea out your bedroom window (if it is a side opener) on to them below? Shock Grin

JudyCoolibar · 05/07/2016 08:48

Have you tried calling out of the window to ask them to be quiet when they're actually talking at midnight? It might get home to them a bit more. DS used to do this occasionally with his mates, and it appeared to be that they simply lost track of (a) the time and (b) their volume control. After the first two or three times we told them to shut up they got the message, and it placated our neighbours when they realised that we were dealing with it.

GoldPlatedBacon · 05/07/2016 08:53

I've rented a lot of properties over the past 15 years and have had three sets of noisy neighbours (mostly very loud music late at night but also washing machines/vacuums on at midnight). I find the tit for tat approach works rather well if they don't make changes when I ask them nicely to quieten down.

In your situation I would have your children standing below their windows singing whilst you dilly dally getting ready to leave Grin

I'm also a fan of ringing the doorbell.

I don't expect silence, just some common sense, and the neighbours all quieten down after I did to them what they did to me.

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 05/07/2016 09:03

I think you should get some window boxes which need liberal watering nightly just before you go to bed.
Even if you are not actively watering while they are chatting, they'll still be getting dripped on for quite a while........
