DS(9) is going into yr5. It's a brilliant school in a shitty area. At least three times a year there is a school disco. With tuck shop.

I know the takings are used to fund end of year booze ups for the staff. I like their entrepreneureal(sp?) acumen.

AIBU to be happy that DS's teachers are so resourceful? Or should I be outraged and appalled that they are exploiting our children for to pay for their end of year addictions, depravity and off the clock sinfulness?

I'm torn.

What? I doubt teachers get to use whatever money's raised for themselves, it's most likely spent on much needed school resources and even if it's spent on booze, as long as their by drunk in school school who cares

The most important resource DS's school has, is its teachers. A few suck, some are ok, but most of them are very good and some are brilliant.

Yes they use the money made at school discos for their boozy end of year chill outs (food is always available). And I am happy at how they fund it.

There's no way the teachers do this. Total crap.

I think that's absolute rubbish. Although I don't mind teachers getting a night out.

A few years ago a school here paid for teachers nights and out drink. There was uproar. Now the school pays for food but no alcohol.

I don't believe this is why your school have a disco or that it's accepted by the governors and ofsted as perfectly normal and acceptable.

This is common place at children's activity centres- and is designed to motivate the staff not to steal eat the profits.

Are you sure, OP/ At our school the money goes to the PTA and the governors and HT decides what to spend it on... sounds v unlikely.

Nope, no way.

All functions at school will have any profits used to directly enhance the childrens' learning.

Any other policy would have to go past the Governors, and it would be chucked staright out, right there. Schools are for learning, not pissing up.

I wonder if this is true, personally I would be happier providing a case of wine for our staff parties than having to chaperon. regular discos to get them for free.

Amazing the stuff that people tend to know as a fact that turns out to be rubbish especially parents about teachers. I'd be very certain of your facts but if you are convinced you could complain to the school.

(My bet is the reality is the school do fund an end of year thank you and having worked in a school in a challenging area realise they probably deserve it but odds are the school provide the food and a little bit of wine and the teachers provide the rest rather than the school "pay for a piss up" but that doesn't make for such good playground gossip)

By all means complain but don't moan when the discos are then cancelled because the school decide it isn't fair for the teachers to give up their time for free after school if there is going to be backlash from the playground Mafia.

If it's a private school it could be true; they can do what they like.

Our Wedsnesday night tuck shop funds Pizza Hut for our Year 8 boarders on their last night in the school. Gets them out of our hair. Potentially not fair on the younger children funding it though. It doesn't fund our wine but we get that in abundance from the headmaster anyway - at school events too!

Usually school discos are run by the PTA and the funds used for school resources. If it is a proper PTA then they will have quite strict rules as to what they can use it for.

I would be surprised if the school used its own funds or pta funds for boozy summer lunches. Especially given where school budgets are going.

So I would suggest you find out a bit more about your pta.

Any end of term do I've ever been to has been funded by the staff and is for the staff. It's either been a night out at a a restaurant or everyone bring a dish and we'll have it in the staff room type thing.

Probably the only time the staff room is used tbh.
