to ask ....what about lidl?

Just saw a similar thread about aldi. But we don't have an aldi, within 1 hour and a half anyway, which would defeat the object.

Usually everyone waxes lyrical about aldi, but what about lidl? How can I succeed in shopping in lidl.

I prefer Aldi but lidl is good too! Our local one is just sooooo busy the whole time. Lots of choice in lidl, be brave try different things. Like their shampoos and conditioners.

I don't find it as cheap as Aldi though!

Lidl is great. When I first went there I assumed that eggs, tinned tomatoes, sugar, cheese etc would be acceptable. Every week I would buy another thing of theirs to see if we liked it. It's all good, except their baked beans (weird and sweet), and the cornflakes (just nasty). Their artisan gin is lovely. Give it a go.

We find the meat from Lidl very good - great value and quality for basics such as mince, chicken breasts, but also for steak, and even more unusual things like kangaroo! And their big tubs of greek style yoghurt are brilliant.

We get everything in Lidl aside from coffee (it's not great) and formula (they don't sell it).
It's fantastic. The food is great quality and so much cheaper than the main supermarkets. I'm particularly a fan of their cheeses, Greek yoghurt, fruit and veg, fresh fish and Toujours nappies. Oh, and the wine.
Those I hear complaining about lidl or Aldi are usually criticising the ready made stuff - filled pasta, ready meals, etc - which I'm told isn't as good. But if you always cook from scratch anyway, you can't go wrong.

Ha, I see I'm not the only lidl yoghurt fan! It really is good though.

Their Turkish yoghurt is worth selling your soul for.

I like aldi and lidl. Our lidl is further away, but worth the trip. I like their bakery bit. Think it's better than Aldi.

And they do this gorgeous juice. It's called vitamin juice or something. It's so nice. Also don't do it.

I love Lidl and Aldi. fruit and veg is great, ripe and tasty, not like the Tesco stuff that is picked way too early, has a shelf life of weeks and tastes of nothing.
bakery is great, and ditto the meats and deli. Soap powder is great too.

Lidl is much better than Aldi (locally anyway). I'm a total convert from Waitrose/Sainsburys/Tesco etc.
They can't be beaten imo.

I was a real snob When it came to lidl and aldie but I am a huge convert. Instead of plodding round Tesco or asda I buy what's there and available instead of the same old things..... I do get a few bits in the local butchers but that's about it.

We shop. Ldll every week. Dont really like aldi as its a downmarket ldll where we are.

I prefer Lidl to Aldi, they have some lovely luxury ranges and their baked on the premises bread and pastry goods are fab. I buy the mini sub baguette things by the dozen and freeze them, they freeze perfectly and are so cheap.

Tried their truffle gnocchi the other week and it really did taste of truffles, delicious.

I'm an Aldi fan - I just like the feel and layout of their stores more. I get a bit overloaded by all the continental-style neon paper signs in Lidl. Aldi also sell more things that are useful to me as a veggie. But I do shop quite happily at both, so definitely not saying Lidl is bad!

The yoghurts are great, especially the huge tub of Turkish yoghurt, and the cat treats and binbags. I like the fish as well, and a lot of the cold meat and cheese.

Definitely prefer Lidl to Aldi, I'm not a fan of Aldi at all (see other thread). The bakery is good in Lidl, the fruit and veg are better than Aldi. Cereals, biscuits, jam etc are poor quality in both. You get what you pay for IMO. Unfortunately the parking is a nightmare at both locally. So I'm not a convert to either.

I think Lidl is actually a bit cheaper than Aldi. Very good for fruit and veg, and the store-baked breads are delicious! Cheese and cooked meats really good too - everything, really! And you can pick up some unusual things when they have their event sort of things (food related to different countries).

I think Lidls is cheaper than Aldis, it also sells some big brands, not just their own. IE Nescafe Heinz , Branson, Ariel, Bold.
The full fat Greek style yoghurt is divine! Good selection of fruit and veg, I'm a veggie but all my family rate the meat.
The "special" buys are good bargains, I got a lot of my running gear from there, and my OH takes hours buying tools when they have them.

The meat is good quality and far cheaper than the tesco's etc.

I've been impressed also with their fruit and vegtables and continental meats/antipasti, ice lollies, frozen desserts and selection of wine .

Although, they don't sell everything I like I top up in the other supermarkets, for instance I buy a fair bit of food from the world food section in the bigger supermarkets, I prefer the fresh pizzas and cereals.

Also love their rye cracker breads, their seeded bread, all their veg and fruit (but check it carefully, it's sometimes past ripe), soy sauce, tins of tuna, sardines etc, the cheese, the ground coffee, the weetabix style cereal, porridge oats, and great value for nuts. DH loves their cereal bars.

Less good items- tried their tortellini and didn't like it, DH doesn't like their ready made curries as much as the Sainsbury's ones, we both thought their wafer thin ham was tasteless (only bought as we were poor that week though- the fancy ham is great), and I'm also not keen on their shampoo as it dries my hair out.

The Deluxe range stuff is excellent, especially the 3 fish roast. Most things are great really, you just have to go in with an open mind and try things.

Aldi and Lidl are just normal supermarkets selling normal food in Germany. They are cheaper than Tesco etc because they have smaller, less flash stores, simpler ranges and fewer staff. Quality is usually as good if not better than the main brands.

The big supermarkets and big brands in the UK have brainwashed people into thinking that big brands = good and Aldi/Lidl = inferior but it's far from true in most cases. Both Aldi and Lidl usually do very well in blind taste comparisons with big brands and other supermarket own ranges.

I prefer Lidl to Aldi solely based on the fact Lidl sell Pepsi Max. And I find the meat better at Lidl. I still get amazed each week like a saddo at how little I spend on a weekly shop.

Their fresh fruit and veg, and fish and meat is great, as is most store cupboard stuff. They do lots of branded stuff cheap, and their fresh pasta and gnocchi (especially the truffle flavoured range!) is fab. I tend to steer away from ready made stuff there but go to Waitrose for that every now and again (using the money I saved by buying everything else at Lidl!)
