to ask ....what about lidl?

Just saw a similar thread about aldi. But we don't have an aldi, within 1 hour and a half anyway, which would defeat the object.

Usually everyone waxes lyrical about aldi, but what about lidl? How can I succeed in shopping in lidl.

I love Lidl, only thing that puts me off is how busy it is and the schlep from store to car park carrying heavy bags (up 3 flights of stairs).

I love the fruit and veg - the avocados are AMAZEBALLS, always ripe and delicious unlike some other stores (Waitrose, i'm looking at you).

Also like the yogurt, mozzarella, chocolate, meat, toiletries. Everything really.
Only thing i dont like so far is the muesli and the humus.

I don't have a Lidl near me these days but when I did I used to buy their perfume Suddenly, it was really lush and I'd read about it in a magazine. Obviously it doesn't last as long as high end perfumes but I think it was about £4 so you could be quite liberal with it throughout the day.

It's been compared to Coco Chanel Mademoiselle!! I remember all these young girls in the checkout stocking up with loads as they'd obviously read the same article.

Stillwishihadabs · 22/06/2016 07:54

Yy to everything already said. Greek yoghurt = amazing. Fruit and veg is great, good quality meat. I like there coffee ( big bag Colombian roast). Their cheese is very good and we all love the sticky toffee pudding.

TheRealGracePoole · 22/06/2016 07:58

I am re-inspired and will hot foot it to Lidl forthwith.

Qq you mention the wine runningupthathill any good reds you can recommend?

LIDLS amazing. I genuinely enjoy doing a shop there.

Best bits: the vine.tomatoes with little sashets of salt and olive oil, their own brand Mozzarella, streaky bacon, beetroot and all the meat.

The clothes are surprisingly good quality as well, we have 2 pairs of lidl snow chains......

Julia2016 · 22/06/2016 08:12

Love these from lidl:

Fair trade Cab Sav/merlot
Bixies - weetabix
Passata
Hummus
Sundried tomatoes
Cat treats - cats adore them
Mini peanut bars - really like snickers
Organic potatoes
GI bread from bakery

There's more but I can't think right now!

Mega Lidl fan here,

Has anyone mentioned the magical middle aisle? All sorts of strange useful things. DH came home on Saturday with a mini pierrade/raclette stove (to add to the two full size ones we already have. Sigh )

We watched 'Sewing Bee' last week where they were making stretchy sports clothes and are now looking at his Lidl cycling gear with new respect.

Sadly TrickyCat won't eat their cat foid,

TondelayaDellaVentamiglia · 22/06/2016 08:58

their mega cheap jelly cat food (in the yellow box) is amazing....one of mine is a terrible Princess and really won't eat anything else, she'll give the gravy version a go but she doesn't like it for more than a day. And it doesn't reek.

Other than than everyone already mentioned most things

Their christmas/easter choc range is usually fab, and the lebkuchen are just gorgeous.

The almonds in tins, salted and BBQ in particular.
Their baking range of fruit/nut are very reasonably priced
ditto SR/plain/strong flour

Love their promotions weeks...often masses of stuff you would never see in a standard supermarket.
Also decorations...halloween/easter/chirstmas...all very exciting!

I need to try Lidl catfood on my lot again. They do like the Aldi catfood but of course, being cats chop and change their preferences on a whimusually after buying a job lot of their previously preferred type.

They were offered Lidl catfood once before but didn't seem keen but have firmly rejected Whiskas in the past too. Current favourite is a naice version of Felix which is bearable pricewise if on special offer but there's no way on earth they're getting it at full price Grin.

But Lidl is in my bad books currently for discontinuing the bakery ciabatta loaf.

BarbaraofSeville · 22/06/2016 09:31

A bit niche but last Christmas Lidl had Marrons Glaces at about a quarter the price they were in Waitrose.

BarbaraofSeville · 22/06/2016 09:33

On a roll now. During 'Greek Week' they do a really nice frozen pork/rice/veg dish called Gyros - I always buy several bags and wish they did it all year round.

They sometimes have Ritter Sport chocolate, which is quite hard to find in the UK.

switswoo81 · 22/06/2016 09:39

I have a brand new lidl and Aldi within ten minute walk. Find both of them have really upped their fresh salads, bulgar wheat, quinoa, carrot and raisin. So cheap compared to local supermarkets. 5% fat mince is as good as any butchers in Aldi.
It's the bakery in lidl that kills me....the cookies.

FiveShelties · 22/06/2016 09:42

Fruit and veg at our local Lidl is not good, goes off really quickly. I buy olives, tinned tomatoes, jam and honey there. Have tried meat but find this disappointing too, also the cooked meat seems to have no flavour. Perhaps it is down to the individual store - I have only tried the one locally. I can see how you would save money if you shopped there all the time as there is so little choice which would reduce my impulse purchases!

A new Aldi has just opened but only popped in once and bought pate, which was fine.

Babyroobs · 22/06/2016 09:44

I love or local Lidl ( apart from the horrible manager). It has an extensive bakery with loads of different pasrties, rolls, mini pizzas etc. The chocolate twists are amazing ! The fruit is good and cheap and we buy quite a lot of stuff like ribs, pulled pork etc. Toiletries are good and I use their formil washing powder and find it ok. We buy a lot of basics from Lidl, cheese, orange juice, eggs, milk and they are all fine.

LittleCandle · 22/06/2016 09:49

My cats eat the Lidl sachets with joy but turn up their noses at the crunchy cat food. Fair enough. We love their bakery and you can't go wrong buying the Ernesto pots, pans and knives. the knives are particularly good. We didn't like the cereal much, but as we don't eat much cereal, it doesn't bother us. We don't usually eat ready meals either. Their fresh produce is great and the microwave in the pack salmon is ace for a quick meal when you come in at night. the potato salad is good, as is the coleslaw.

To be honest, there isn't that much that we don't buy at Lidl!

Runningupthathill82 · 22/06/2016 10:09

Dentinox teething gel is currently 89p in my nearby Lidl - compared to almost double that in the Sainsburys round the corner.

The nappies and wipes are among the best I've tried, too. And so cheap. DD weed right through Sainsburys own brand, and Boots ones make her sore, but lidl ones are great.

SpringerS · 22/06/2016 10:11

I shop in both. Aldi is probably slightly better but each store excels at some things. My favourite thing in Lidl would have to be their ice-cream. Sooooo good, really rich and creamy. Especially the ones that are like almond Magnums, so, so, so much nicer than the original.

DramaAlpaca · 22/06/2016 10:13

Oh yes, Lidl magnums are better than the real thing.

Lidl is closer than Aldi for me & I go every week. I think the following are really great:

Fruit & veg
Yoghurt
Cold meats
Little packs of cooked crayfish
Chorizo
Cheeses (especially their parmesan & camembert)
Jars of roasted red peppers
Jars of sweet cherries
Jam
Anti-aging moisturiser
Chocolate covered cherries
Chocolate
Arctic biscuits (like penguins - my kids love them)

Hungry now.
