To think this is the rudest behaviour

We were out for an early dinner. Myself, DH and DC (teenagers) picked a local eaterie with a good early bird deal. The restaurant is empty except for a man dining alone a few tables away.

He takes a smartphone out of his pocket and proceeds to watch TV on the phone with the volume up. We were speechless. Confused

AIBU to think this is so rude?!

In a word YES!

ElsaAintAsColdAsMe · 16/06/2016 19:15

Not really, presumably you were all talking etc. He probably thought you wouldn't notice or care.

Queenbean · 16/06/2016 19:15

It's annoying but it's not THE rudest behaviour. If he had pooed on your table it would be up there.

I presume you went over and in a calm and reasonable tone asked him if he would turn it down. And because this is real life and nothing is every embellished, he respectfully did so and you moved on with your days?

JohnBarrowmaniac · 16/06/2016 19:15

Yes it is. i would have asked a member of staff to seat us somewhere else.

MorticiaLiverish · 16/06/2016 19:17

He's alone, I can't see the problem? How was it affecting you? If the venue was empty apart from your family and this man, couldn't you have moved away?

InanimateCarbonRod · 16/06/2016 19:17

Restaurant was very quiet. DCs being teenagers were on their phones. It was loud enough to be heard at the back by the toilets.

Ehh...no, not the rudest behaviour I can think of. I assume you ad yours were talking amongst yourselves...why would you care what he was doing?

FoxesOnSocks · 16/06/2016 19:18

Was he with you?

Why is someone sitting alone watching to rude? Do you mean because of the sound?

morningtoncrescent62 · 16/06/2016 19:18

I hope you regained the power of speech, OP, and either asked him to turn the volume down/off, or asked the staff to ask him. If you didn't, then he was rude but YWBU not to deal with it and let him think his rudeness was acceptable.

I'd think your own DC were ruder.

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 16/06/2016 19:20

I'd be pissed off at the volume from his phone.

Did you tell him it was a bit loud for you?

MariaSklodowska · 16/06/2016 19:21

" DCs being teenagers were on their phones "

hang on so you took your DC out for dinner and they sat at the table ignoring u, on their phones. And then you complain about the rudeness of some other man who also had a device? Have I got that right?

FeckinCrutches · 16/06/2016 19:22

I think your children were being rude sitting on their phones during dinner. Didn't you ask him to turn it down?

murmeli · 16/06/2016 19:22

But your own children were on their phones?

Madeyemoodysmum · 16/06/2016 19:24

I wouldn't take kids or teens out and then let them on phones. Otherwise what's the point of family time?!

InanimateCarbonRod · 16/06/2016 19:25

Totally missing the point ladies.

FeckinCrutches · 16/06/2016 19:26

Ok, that aside, what did you say to him?

Queenbean · 16/06/2016 19:26

If you ask for opinions on AIBU you'll be given them!

I agree he is rude but your not setting a good example to your own kids if you let them do that. They are not toddlers and should be able to talk with you and each other. I don't get why you would go out tbh. Why spend all that money if they are not engaging.

What point are you pissed off about?
