I was out in town today and heard a woman call out the name Machiavelli and a little boy ran up to her and answered 'yes mum'. Given that the historical figure Machiavelli was a manipulative schemer, AIBU to think it's not an appropriate name for a little child. I couldn't quite believe my ears the first time I heard the name but she repeated the name once more & the poor child responded once more to the name. The poor little fellow is going to be ripped apart when he grows older.

What on earth where his parents thinking when they chose the name. Can anyone top this name in the Confused whackiest name poll?

Arf.

alltoomuchrightnow · 15/06/2016 18:59

hahahha a ridiculous name and agreed..not appropriate! Not a nice character!

guthriegirl · 15/06/2016 19:00

Maybe the end justifies the means............

alltoomuchrightnow · 15/06/2016 19:00

maybe he'll just be known as Mac and never let on when he's grown up

pointythings · 15/06/2016 19:01

Surely Arf would just be short for Arfur?

I suppose little Machiavelli could go by Mac as he gets older. And then never, ever, ever tell his friends what it's short for.

Then again deed poll is cheap.

Some parents are loons.

BeautifulMaudOHara · 15/06/2016 19:02

Ha ha, what were they thinking?

UterusUterusGhali · 15/06/2016 19:03

Could have just called him Niccolò, which was his actual name. Hmm

CoraPirbright · 15/06/2016 19:05

Mac is a cool name....... but why can't it just be that? Not short for something bonkers Confused

If you hang out on the baby name topic, you will see the name Lilith suggested quite often. Always boggles my mind. I suppose if you want to name your dd after some child-eating-witch-demon thats up to you..... but seriously? ShockConfused

It's a hell of a mouthful but I think he got a bad rap. So did Lucretia Borgia.

I don't like surnames as first names. I'm now so during what this kids surname is. Bet it's Smith or McCauley.

It it could be a lengthening of his real name (cant think what). We greekify DS's names and they come out a right mouthful. I worked with a Lucy who got called Lucifer.

LemonRedwood · 15/06/2016 19:18

Still my favourite.

UptownFunk00 · 15/06/2016 19:19

Not my thing.

But Michael D'Angelo does have a ring to it.

HighDataUsage · 15/06/2016 19:21

I can't get over the name, why would you want to call your child Machiavelli? The mind boggles at the thought process involved, or was there a thought process? Did they think it sounded cool & exotic? Lord knows.

Shallishanti · 15/06/2016 19:32

wasonthelist · 15/06/2016 19:33

According to the Torygraph, 20 babies have been registered in hte UK with the first name Adolf since 1945.

CauliflowerBalti · 15/06/2016 19:35

Maybe they don't know what Machiavelli became famous for...?

ClashCityRocker · 15/06/2016 19:39

I wonder if they were Tupac fans....

LisaMed1 · 15/06/2016 19:40

Terry Pratchett said that someone thought 'Anathema' would be a nice name for a girl.

I always wonder if someone has called their girl anathema.

polyhymnia · 15/06/2016 19:41

Yes he did get a bad deal ( part of my PhD was on him ) I agree. Still not a great choice of name!

FireTruckOhFireTruck · 15/06/2016 19:55

Confused this thread is awful. It's one thing slating a name when someone's asked for an opinion on the baby names thread, but to come home and start a thread about an actual child is awful.

lovealookabout · 15/06/2016 19:59

Just come back from reception class meeting- name on a coat peg "Aston Martin" I'm confused about whether this is geniusly tongue in cheek or a bit deluded 😂 I wonder if my little Renault Laguna will be in his class...

blackbirdmilkshake · 15/06/2016 19:59

tupac fans?

blackbirdmilkshake · 15/06/2016 19:59

JasperDamerel · 15/06/2016 20:02
