To think this isn't a very 'sanitary' towel?

My friend revealed to me the other day that she uses toilet roll instead of a sanitary towel. She folds it up into a few layers and changes it a few times a day. She asked if I did the same, I said no and she said I should because it saves money.

Thoughts?

Ok in an emergency until you can get a proper towel it tampon but not as a regular thing.

It's fine if you've been caught short out and about for a short time but it's not very comfortable or particularly effective for full time use. She must have very light periods

It wouldn't work, surely? Wouldn't stay in the right place, would move around and would leak!

If it works for her then great. Can't see why anyone would have an issue with how someone else manages their periods?

Well we were a bit because she assumed lots of women did it whereas she was the first I'd heard of doing it. Granted I don't know many women's personal care habits.

That would last me all of 30 seconds. Only use toilet tissue in an absolute emergency.

It works in emergencies for light periods but it sort of bunches up and slips to one side. It is only good as a short term measure to stem the flow, so to speak.

Tescos value towels are 65p for 14. I think that would probably work out cheaper and more effective than loo roll (although I have no idea of the quality of them to be honest ).

She has obviously never had anything but a very light flow. I would soak through loo roll in seconds!

If you were completely stuck then it might be necessary but it can't be very comfortable or convenient. I wouldn't feel like I could go out of the house with just that as protection. Is she really strapped for cash? Don't the supermarkets do a cheap value range of pads?

I do it when caught short but it moves and soaks through in a couple of hours and sticks to your lady bits and I have light periods.
I have moved onto a moon cup. DH is Grossed out by it but he doesn't have to deal with them so I don't give a monkeys :)

Yes, good point. I'm just thinking of it from my own experience, I would be left with a sodden mess within seconds and it would spread (sorry). I suppose it must be very different for her, hence her confusion at me finding it odd.

From the look of the pack they could be old fashioned brick stylee but surely better and cheaper than bog roll?

I don't think she's strapped for cash at all, just sees it as a pointless expense as you can get toilet roll from public places too and her work, etc.

My immediate reaction is envy that a) she has light enough periods to be able to do this b) therefore has no extra costs involved in menstruating and c) doesn't find a wodge of loo roll in her pants unreliable or uncomfortable

I've done it when caught out or totally skint. It didn't bunch up and fall to side and it didn't leak - and I was really heavy. The only issue I had was picking out rolled up bits of damp loo roll from my pubes afterwards. It's not something I'd do out of choice but I'd not judge someone if that was their preference.

I've done it as a last resort in a desperate situation ( unexpectedly came on while on a boat in Turkey - wearing only a bikini - had to walk around with a towel wrapped around me like a sarong ) but not just to save money. It's no where near absorbant enough.

If it works for her then fine. Women have been managing menstruation for thousands of years before tampax were invented, moss, animal skin etc. Loo roll is just as good.

The STs I use have wings so stay in place better - I'm always paranoid that the tissue will move and fall out of my knickers :o it happened in the past although thankfully nobody noticed

There's no way I could use loo roll for anything other than buying me time to go get stuff from my handbag. My periods are just too heavy to use loo roll. Besides, it's just not comfortable.
