To think this isn't a very 'sanitary' towel?

My friend revealed to me the other day that she uses toilet roll instead of a sanitary towel. She folds it up into a few layers and changes it a few times a day. She asked if I did the same, I said no Confused and she said I should because it saves money.

Thoughts?

It's quite common in Kenya, the Always adverts compare their products to loo roll rather than other brands. If someone was using it in a developed country rather than spend £1 on sanpro I'd think they were really struggling
with their finances tbh.

I've no idea how. If he told me I forgot why. It just one of those things that stuck with me.

Do people really discuss the use of tissue vs sanitary towels with their doctors? I also can't think how using tissue would promote infection more than towels or tampons.

Using loo roll from a public toilet as tampon might cause issues. But then, apparently tampons aren't even required to be tested for safety, so perhaps it's the same unless the loo roll has bacteria on it.

However, using clean tissue instead of a pad ... I don't see how that could cause infections.

A gynecologist told me that using pads with plastic lining can promote the growth of fungus. Because it gets all warm and humid and so on. In that respect, clean tissue would be better.

The only reason i can think of toilet paper being an infection risk is that it disintegrates very quickly.

Using that in place of a tampon or pad will leave pieces stuck on or inside you.

I've pretty much always done this. It's comfortable, flushable, cheap and rarely shifts. Never had any infections. Didn't realise I must have such light periods!

I do this if caught short or period unexpectedly heavy and tampon not enough and stuck at work.
It's scratchy though and I'd worry about bits of toilet roll falling out of my knickers (I wear skirts at work) if I did it regularly.
I'm not poor enough for a few tampons to bankrupt me.

I am so jealous of this! If I used loo roll I would need to stuff enough in there to wipe your arse for a month, and it would still be lucky to last more than 10 minutes.
I use sea sponges.

I've done it in an emergency but wouldn't as a matter of course (Mooncup user) as I found it didn't stay in place properly.

Lucky indeed. I am sick and i am tired of wearing a max tampon long night towel and two pairs of knickers and still resort to throwing soiled pants and nighties out.

whatdoIget · 30/05/2016 15:57

I've done it in an emergency. I wrap it around the gusset of my knickers which means it can't fall out (apologies to all those who hate those 2 words)

NapoleonsNose · 30/05/2016 16:13

I've resorted to loo roll when I've been caught short and it's fine for an emergency but not much good when in full flow. I'm interested in the sea sponges though. Will have to investigate further.

I ended up managing my post-birth bleeding like this as most towels give me eczema and I couldn't use tampons/mooncup/sponges, which don't give me eczema. I'd bought special cotton fibre maternity towels as I thought they'd be ok but they weren't and I couldn't bear the thought of having eczema on top of the stitches. I used a folded pad of paper and then a long piece wrapped round the crotch area of a pair of black knickers to secure it. Luckily the bleeding was lighter than I think most people have as I'd needed to have the placenta removed by the doctors. Next time I'd buy washable cotton cloth pads as I found it a bit messy.

I buy my body form towels from pound land and sanitary liners from tesco. Cheap either way. Disgusting to just use tissue.
