To let ds1 dye his hair blue?

He's 13. He's off to scout camp tomorrow and some of his peers have dared him to. I said we can go to Tesco and see what they have available but I think they might only have permanent stuff.

His hair is shoulder length and he says if it comes to it he'll grow it out a bit and then cut it short.

School stipulates natural colours only but the dye I'm thinking of is a blue/black and the blue tone fades quite quickly. So he might end up with short hair with black ends and mousey roots.

What do you reckon? Would this be appalling parenting?

Blue black only dyes hair black not blue. It may have a very slight blue tinge in the light.

You should only do this if it is non permanent. Don't be surprised if the school then exclude him for this. You know exactly what you are doing or you wouldn't be asking.

Absolutely don't use the black/blue hair dye, black is an absolute nightmare- doesn't come out and you can't cover it.

I used to dye my hair in bright colours as a teen, I used Stargazer dye which always came up well and faded after a week or so.

I did mine purple with a semi permanent recently and it lasted just over a week with daily washing. Dye came from sainsburys oh how times have changed

Can you get hair chalks for now and do it properly over the long summer holidays?

If he really wants it though, then let him do it during the summer holidays.

As a PP said though, there's no point in dying it black/blue as it will just look black.

Unless it washes out straight away there is your answer, but at least you could get in to the daily mail doing a sad face.

I'd wait for the summer holidays, but what colour is his hair in the first place?

I let my very blonde DD1 die her hair with red supposedly wash out dye at the start the start of the holidays - 6 weeks and frantic hair washing later, it was still very pink and we had to cover it it with a mid brown dye

His peers have dared him? So they're the ones going to school with normal hair and your son is the big patsy with stupid coloured hair who'll probably get excluded whilst they're all standing round having a good laugh.

Could he dip dye it, ie just do the bottom couple of inches? Dead easy to chop off if you can't get it out come next Sunday.

Like another poster said, if he's the only one that's been dared to do it I say don't bother. This can sometimes come across as a control exercise to me. What's next on their dares, a piercing? Or will he get a tattoo when he's 18 because someone dared him to do it?

Wanting blue hair and doing it for a date are two totally different things to me.

There's hair chalk that washes out that should give him the colour without the permanence. The blue black eyes are a no go. They're a nightmare to get out without harsh chemical colour stripping and maybe even bleach.

The semi permanent blues depend on his natural hair colour to take. If it's light, it'll stain. Blue hangs around forever and a day like green.

Try the wash in and wash out sprays?

They've dared him because they know he's the one who'll get in trouble and they will be sitting pretty. I would guess his friends have performed this dynamic on him many times and he's fallen for it as he loves being the crazy centre of attention.

Don't let him do it and point out his friends aren't being friendly.

It's not a nasty dare.

Anyway, went into town and got some turquoise wash out stuff. We're about to do it now.

Hair will only actually dye proper blue if it is very light or bleached first. And blue is really hard to wash out, even the semi permanent ones are really difficult to get rid of. If he wants actual blue hair he will need to bleach it, and then I guess dye it brown again, or chop it all off. It will wash out / fade to green...

His hair is dark blonde. He knows it won't go bright blue but he's happy with that. It's on now. Not sure how well the photo shows it as we're in the garden.

If it doesn't wash out by Sunday I'll dye it back to a natural colour.

Blue hair is a huge PITA precisely because it washes out so quickly. I'm sure it will be ace for the time it stays!
