to use a persona as contraception?

For health reasons I want to avoid all hormones, and the coil. I really don't want a third baby... And we are fed up of condoms. Can anyone talk to me about using a Persona as contraception, the website says it is 94% fool proof. But it still seems a bit risky to me... Thoughts please Star

I would say if you don't mind having a 3rd baby, then go for it 😁

WordGetsAround · 21/05/2016 13:12

94% if user totally abc utterly correctly sounds far too risky for my liking if you really don't want a third child! In real life it might be a lot less than 94% too!

WordGetsAround · 21/05/2016 13:13

Sorry - used totally and utterly...

StiickEmUp · 21/05/2016 13:15

I thought persona meant being a horrible person so no one would want to sleep with you BlushHmm

hiphophippity · 21/05/2016 13:15

Oh god what can I do then?

OP posts:
hiphophippity · 21/05/2016 13:15

dimdiolch · 21/05/2016 13:16

Stiick i though persona meant a man using a fake name Blush

HeartsofOak · 21/05/2016 13:17

A Persona just tells you when you are ovulating before and after. It's up to you to be absolutely disciplined about testing your urine everyday and then what you do (or don't) with the information.

I think it's quite good if your periods are very regular, you don't drink and you are prepared to use MAP or medical abortion if you get caught out.

hiphophippity · 21/05/2016 13:18

Why can't you drink?! This definitely doesn't sound very suitableWine

Get your DP to have the snip

scaevola · 21/05/2016 13:18

Assuming they have quoted a 'perfect use' figure, this puts it below the effectiveness of other NFP methods.

For comparison, perfect use of just calendar method (no symptom tracking) is 95

Typical use fail rates, for all NFP combined, is however 24. They are the group of methods with the biggest difference between typical and perfect use rates).

SpinnakerInTheEther · 21/05/2016 13:18

What about using it in conjunction with another barrier method, like a cap?

I have used Persona but only in conjunction with a barrier method. It actually was great and I later used it to help me get pregnant, when trying to conceive.

Onlyicanclean10 · 21/05/2016 13:19

Get your dh yo have the snip!

VikingVolva · 21/05/2016 13:20

"Get your DP to have the snip"

??

She's asking about contraception, isn't she? Not surgical permanent removal of fertility (quite a different scale of decision).

About 15 years ago I was backstage at a very popular music festival.

I was sitting quite happily minding my own business when 3 music journos came and sat at the next table and started hassling me - there was one main instigator of this. I let him go on for about 10 minutes, looked up and over my shades and said 'do you two use him as contraception?', and he went bright red and his twatty mates just cracked up. Every time I saw them for the rest of the festival they just fell about laughing at him and he looked more and more embarrassed. One of his mates said 'nice comeback' to me luckily I never saw him again.

natwebb79 · 21/05/2016 13:23

We've had the same conundrum and DH is off for the snip soon. We both concluded I've had my years of hormones, growing babies and getting my body back to 'normal'. Otherwise we would be fumbling about for condoms forever and that didn't sound like a particularly attractive prospect. Grin

CuntTrollingRs · 21/05/2016 13:24

We did this and it just made me broody to see when I was ovulating Smile-we ended up with 4 dcs...

icouldabeenacontender · 21/05/2016 13:27

I used this 20 years ago, no problems, but as said above if a 3rd baby is an absolute no no then I would probably look for an alternative.

CaroleService · 21/05/2016 13:28

Someone i know did this was 2m pregnant at her wedding ...

RockMeMomma · 21/05/2016 13:31

How does it work. Could you or your oh get sterilised?

Sidge · 21/05/2016 13:34

Natural family planning, especially with ovulation prediction CAN work if you have a regular cycle, don't take certain medications (especially hormonal), will test religiously, can abstain when necessary (no getting carried away!) and if another pregnancy wouldn't be a disaster.

If you 100% don't want a third child then consider male or female sterilisation.

hiphophippity · 21/05/2016 13:35

We don't want a third. Don't have enough room, got career things I want to get on with. But sterilisation seems extreme. Is there no compromise that doesn't involve hormones?

elspethmcgillicuddy · 21/05/2016 13:37

I highly recommend 'Taking Charge of Your Fertility' by Toni Weschler. It is an excellent book and gives you all the tools to do your own natural family planning with only a thermometer and a chart (plus some know how about cervical mucous etc). I used it successfully for several years before kids and then when TTC. I think knowing and understanding the processes is far better than using a persona or similar machine.

SouperSal · 21/05/2016 13:39

What's wrong with condoms? Much mess messy!

Abbinob · 21/05/2016 13:39

Copper coil? That doesn't have hormones does it?
