to pick up the bread roll with my hands?

In the bakery bit of the supermarket I always pick up the bread rolls with my hands, ensuring I don't touch any of the other rolls. I don't see the point in using the tongs cos I'm the only one that's going to eat it, however someone really tutted at me for doing that today so I'm wondering if people consider it gross? No one uses tongs for the apples or courgettes or whatever so I don't get the difference.

I agree with you but most people will probably come on to say it is minging to use your hands.

I've also read that the supermarket bread tongs never get cleaned and get dropped on the floor/handled by dirty people etc etc so are probably filthy anyway.

Leviticus · 05/05/2016 12:18

The difference I suppose is that you can't wash your bread rolling at home.

I agree with you though and also find it easy to use my hands without wiping dirt over the remaining rolls.

I once saw a disgusting shopper squeeze a selection of bread rolls with his bare hand to test how fresh they were while discussing them with his companion. When challenged over his revolting behaviour by my friend who I was with, he and his companion shuffled off without a word.

I guess people don't know whether you're going to do the same which is why they're tutting.

Plus you can either wash or peel apples and courgettes so it doesn't matter if they've already been touched by other shoppers.

ZsaZsa1954 · 05/05/2016 12:19

Nope, same here. As for people tutting - who cares?

heyhulahoop · 05/05/2016 12:22

Oh I didn't think about the washing thing cos I never wash my fruit and veg Blush

I don't like using the tongs either. I use the plastic bag to pick the roll up with.

Queenbean · 05/05/2016 12:44

I put the plastic bag inside out then pick up the roll with my hands

Tongs are gross. Although so are the bread rolls which have probably already been coughed and sneezed on by several grotty people

gandalf456 · 05/05/2016 12:45

This has put me off buying bread rolls (not you, OP, the thread).

I think it's OK to touch them with your hands so long as you don't change your mind and put them back.

MadameCholetsDirtySecret · 05/05/2016 12:46

Sneezing over produce is grim. This is why I don't buy from those pick your own displays.

idontlikealdi · 05/05/2016 12:48

I do the same op - I reckon my hands are cleaner than the tongs.

I also don't wash fruit and veg much - I don't reckon a quick rinse is actually going to clean anything off.

Pinkheart5915 · 05/05/2016 12:53

I put the plastic bag inside out then pick up the roll with my hands

Me too.

heyhulahoop · 05/05/2016 13:03

Oh you can't do that in lidl cos the bags are long and made of stiff paper.

OP posts:
HermioneJeanGranger · 05/05/2016 13:11

I wouldn't buy those rolls anyway - God knows who's sneezed or coughed or grabbed at them Envy

ifgrandmahadawilly · 05/05/2016 13:17

YANBU to pick up baked goods with your hands.

YABU to make me think about baked goods while stuck at work. I could really go for a Lidl Cinnamon bun right now.

isseywithcats · 05/05/2016 14:28

people sneezing and coughing on fresh bread and cakes, tongs being dropped and picked up by people with not very clean hands, and children picking them up and putting them back is exactly why i dont buy open bakery goods, i buy ones cooked on premises and packeged

Never buy any loose akery products which are out like that, yuk, have seen people poking and prodding, squeezing them and putting them back ...

EastMidsMummy · 05/05/2016 16:50

Has anyone ever died from eating a supermarket bread roll? I fucking think not. You are all paranoid.

TopPony · 05/05/2016 16:54

I use the tongs, I have made it in a game because some are really awkward to use. If I really don't manage I use a plastic bag.

I find it quite unhygienic if people don't use tongs/plastic bag. I have seen plenty of people over time happily scratching their bum and then touching food ... Mind you, there is no guarantee that if you buy bread at a bakery that the staff wash their hands properly either.

ClaudiaApfelstrudel · 05/05/2016 17:03

I always pick up the ones at the bottom of the pile, that way at least I tell myself they are probably less likely to have been sneezed on

Thurlow · 05/05/2016 17:05

I always use my hands - but only on the item I'm definitely picking up. You can't dither with your hands.

HermioneJeanGranger · 05/05/2016 17:23

It's not about getting sick, I'd just rather avoid eating a bread roll that's come into contact with a toddlers sticky, snot covered fingers if I can help it Grin

Beepbopboop · 05/05/2016 17:41

Get a plastic bag put your hand in it then pick up the bread roll and turn it outside and tie a knot.

BertrandRussell · 05/05/2016 17:46

Perfectly reasonable to pick up a roll with your fingers. Perfectly unreasonable to call it a bread roll. Grin
