To ask what to do about the pill now?!

So I was meant to start a new BC pill this month.

Last night my BF and I were having sex when he noticed some blood on himself (sorry TMI) I went into the loo and there was definitely blood there and it felt like a period. Plus, I was three days past the date I was due to get my period anyway.

So I took the first pill.

Now all day today there has been NOTHING. no bleeding. Some very mild spots but nothing else.

I have a UTI and still new to sex- so maybe that's what the blood was?!

I don't know if I should take the second pill today? Or wait for when the period actually starts?

I'd carry on, if you've started, but use condoms as a back up for a month or two so that you know it's all aligned and working correctly.

When were you originally planning to start your new pill? What contraception were you using in the meantime?

But anyway, I am so confused about the pill. The BF absolutely HATES condoms and it's going to be a struggle to get him to use them...

We've been using condoms so far and hating it...

Keep taking the pill. Be very clear about taking it the correct time of the day, etc.

If you are worried, please see your GP, or at least to a pharmacist at your local chemist. There is no need for you to be worried these days!

I've already taken the pill wrong twice and suffered. So scared to do it again

I would keep taking the pill, but if you're worried about taking it incorrectly, would something like the injection or implant be better for your peace of mind? Appreciate these methods aren't suitable for everyone though so apologies if you have already discounted these

I agree, Squeaky, have you considered other forms of BC, op? I get the depo injection and am finding it really good. No periods for a start! But, obviously everyone reacts differently. For the moment, I'd carry on with the pill if you've already taken one but definitely use condoms also.

I noticed you said sex has always been painful. Is that because you've had a UTI the whole time? If not, it really shouldn't cause pain every time. Are you on antibiotics for your UTI? Because that can affect the pill, just in case you weren't aware!

If you only bled for one day is there any chance you could be pregnant? Maybe pop to home bargains and get a cheapy test today just to be sure.

Keep taking the pills now you have started, but definitely use condoms for the first month as well, because if it wasn't actually your period then it may not be working as a contraceptive yet.

And I second the advice about seeing your GP or pharmacist if you are still confused. Also it may be worth seeing your GP about the fact that you find sex painful, there may be a medical cause, and if not there are things that can help.

I'm sure that pill will stop your period. That why you have a 7 days break. Taking at the very start of period is a way to get them into a cycle

Carry on taking the pill. Use condoms for the first 7 days in case this wasn't your period. Take a pregnancy test in 3 weeks. Speak to your GP if you don't understand how to take it, and read the leaflet in the box! Also, sex shouldn't be painful, so see your GP about that too.

Dp might hate condoms but would he prefer a baby? Agree with others, keep taking the pill and speak to gp. Did they tell you about the arm implant? I was rubbish at pill taking so gp recommended it and it's been fab, lasts for 3 years at a time then you replace it. I'm nearly finished my second one and no kids yet! (None since having it anyway)

If you feel pain, that is usually your body wanting to tell you something. Namely, that you should stop engaging in the activity that causes it. And, if the activity is not known to cause pain, go and find out why it causes pain to you.

Also, I don't know about you, but I always thought sex was something one did because it feels good. It if is painful, it doesn't feel good (unless you are a masochist, but even those usually prefer very specific types of pain), so where is even the point of it?

What others say about this not being normal and likely caused by UTI is true, but what I am most concerned about is the fact that you continue to do something that is painful.

Are you 100% sure your not pregnant? If you were late and haven't had a proper period I would test before taking the pill

It shouldn't be a "struggle", he should be willing to take his share of responsibility for avoiding pregnancy and the pill won't start working immediately. If he isn't willing to use condoms until you're protected by the pill then don't have sex with him.

You need to go back to the GP about the irregular bleeding and pain during sex. But also, you shouldn't be relying on the pill until you're 100% clear that you understand how it works and how to use it correctly. The fact that you say you've taken it incorrectly before and are still confused about what to do suggests that you need to have a chat with your GP or practice nurse to make sure it is the right form of contraception for you.

MangeToot- what kind of question is that? Do you think women only take the pill if they're having sex? You do realise the pill is taken for other reasons?

Yep, definitely a UTI and no I can be pregnant because we've always done it with a condom. Plus, it's normal for my period to be slightly late.

I'm also taking antibiotics at the moment, so that might reduce the effect of the pill too.

Is it always painful when you have sex? Are you properly turned on when you do it because it really shouldn't be painful.

As for the pill, I echo others. Keep taking it and use condoms for a month. Your DP needs to suck it up if he doesn't like it and take responsibility, it takes 2 to make a baby not just one.

Oh and the only antibiotics that are proven to affect the pill are used to treat TB and leprosy.

Sorry you are having a tough time of it OP. Keep taking the pill but I think it can sometimes take a couple of months to be effective.
Pain during sex happens for lots of women, especially if this is your first sexual relationship. It took me a few weeks to go from painful, to uncomfortable, to comfortable, to pleasurable.
Remember to go slow, lube up and try to relax. A pillow under your bum can help you get a more comfortable position.
Apologies if I am saying what you already know but these were the little things that made sex a lot easier for me.

Nicebucket - fair point, fewer implications from taking it wrong if you aren't using it for contraception though! Please see you GP if they haven't explained properly how to start it and how to take it.

Use condoms for seven days. The pill will protect you immediately if taken from first day of period but can be started at any point in your cycle as long as you cover yourself for the first seven days. This is written in every pill packet. No need to use extra cover for a month.
