We've had:

Jubilee
Longest Reign
Now 90thbirthday

It's not like I don't think she's done a great job being head of state for so long. It's just that I feel we've spent a long time fawning over her achievements and her life while there are lots of other 90 year olds who haven't lived such a privileged innings who also deserve to be cherished and celebrated.
I guess I'm just feeling a bit emotional today as I'm off for a cuppa with my granny at the care home. Some of the inmates residents there never seem to have many visitors and it's really sad.

I worked in Care homes and there were sad takes, one woman, had two children die of lung disease/flu, she never tried for any more.

So she had no visitors, once her siblings were old/dead.

But some people have no visitors for reasons they've bought upon themselves.

I think the queen living such a long and healthy life is down to the excellent health care, personal physicians attending to every need, a life free of money worries etc.

The cynic in me sees her dedication and loyalty to the country more as her determination to hang on to the monarchy at all costs.

Most 90 year olds aren't in as good a shape as the queen purely because they haven't led such privileged and cosseted lives.

YANBU. Made me think more about how ridiculous the whole monarchy bollocks is. Woman that has lived a charmed life living in mutliple homes totalling billions of pounds gets to 90 years old while the country over which she reigns has millions of people having to use food banks. I know that isn't her fault but it has whiffs of Marcos about it to me.

Also (off topic) it has given BBC radio an excuse to play a clip of bleeding town crier a ridiculous number of times today, and I have an irrational hatred of town criers - pillocks.

I honestly believe that it's all PR strategy with Brexit referendum in mind. They are trying to boost the feeling of "Britishness" and the spirit of the Empire, Britain rules the waves.
We'll be seeing more and more in the weeks to come, ad nauseam.

I completely agree that there are many elderly people who are lonely and underappreciated.

On the other hand, I find it a bit much that many people are having a moan on the Queen's 90th birthday. There are 364 other days to complain about the Royals.

Woman turns 90. Splendid - I wish her continued health, same as I would with any other 90 year old. The fawning and arse licking is really nauseating. Trying to avoid all TV and radio news station today

Clandestino I really hadn't taken in the whole Brexit angle but you are so right! I'm therefore a bit surprised that the British/Olympic goodwill from 2012 hasn't been dredged up a bit more- it's an Olympic year this year (I think?!) and a bit of reminiscing about super Saturday could have been a useful tactic. Actually though, the Olympic spirit was all about inclusivity and a very modern Britain- the brexit campaign seems to want to hark back to a mythical time before all that. Anyway- I digress!

I suspect most people don't really care. I'd be very happy to ditch the monarchy tomorrow. The tourists will still come and may even have more access to the palaces. The inequality in this country is sickening and inheritance perpetuates this, with nothing worse than the royal family's undeserved privilege.

I have This Morning on in the background. I don't think there's a bigger Royal Family fan than Pip Schofield. He actually stands up a little taller whenever the Queen is mentioned. It makes me laugh.

Olivia I thoroughly respect that and hope people have a great time, if that's what we want. I just don't have the Royal celebration stamina that others have!

I think it does bring into sharp focus what the future will hold, though. The queen stands for such stability and gravitas and dignity- how much of that is vested in the next generation, I don't know.

I'd like to think she can see out her reign and then just have done the monarchy. It is out-dated and an embarrassment that such a forward-thinking nation is so backwards that we still put up with the mad system and people fawn over a random family that haven't actually done anything to deserve it.

We should celebrate, I think she's done this country proud and still does, privilege doesn't count for everything though, it didn't help Princess Margaret.

I'm not sure why we celebrate her birthday twice though. I know wise Mnetters will be along to answer that question.

I'm by no means a huge Royalist but she is the head of the Country and a ripe old age so let her and those who choose, enjoy and celebrate the occasion. Mind you, I think The Queen has probably had enough of it all too judging by some shots of her 'resting face'! Wink

Now if her birthday meant two bank holidays rather than extended pub opening times then I'm sure more people would like her, it would also mean a long weekend as bank holidays don't count on a weekend (unless you work in retail, service industry or healthcare).

Please
Pay your taxes
Pay proper death duties
Pay land taxes that reflect the massive ownership of great tracts of the UK
Declare all your landholdings and investments here and abroad
Stop having weekly meetings with the PM which is unacceptable soft access/influence in a supposed democracy
Pay for your own security
Hand over some of those houses to the nation for national benefit
(Keep a couple for the tourists)
Put that extraordinary art collection into National Galleries
(That art was acquired by or for the Nation and it belongs where we can see it for free in my opinion)
Stop Prince Andrew representing anything other than himself and stop asking us to subsidise him ever again in any way
Stop projecting Wills and Kate as some kind of New Dawn, it is so patronising.
