We've had:

Jubilee
Longest Reign
Now 90thbirthday

It's not like I don't think she's done a great job being head of state for so long. It's just that I feel we've spent a long time fawning over her achievements and her life while there are lots of other 90 year olds who haven't lived such a privileged innings who also deserve to be cherished and celebrated.
I guess I'm just feeling a bit emotional today as I'm off for a cuppa with my granny at the care home. Some of the inmates residents there never seem to have many visitors and it's really sad.

If you're smart enough to be born or marry a Royal, wanting just to stay at home and enjoy your children becomes laudable and proof of how wonderfully ordinary, modern, and in touch you are.

Try saying you'd like to just stay at home and concentrate on being a parent if you're on benefits and see what the tabloids think of you!

But William has wisely cautioned that you have to be careful with duty or else it can become a heavy heavy burden.... Best just not worry about it too much then, hmm? Or you might have to ask yourself just what that duty is, and when you can't come up with an answer, confront the fact that you have no purpose, no function, and no point.

YelloRoses · 21/04/2016 16:44

Its absolutely embarrassing the way people fawn over her, made me cringe seeing the singing, she was looking at the choir like these stupid peasants.
Don't get me wrong i don't hate the royals or the queen but this isn't 1600 England

SoleBizzz · 21/04/2016 16:49

How dI'd the Queen haters feel about Lady Diana? A privileged spoilt brat.

SukeyTakeItOffAgain · 21/04/2016 16:52

Oh but it surely does. It was the privileges of being a royal princess that were worth far more to her than the love of her life. Her refusing to relinquish the huge excesses of wealth and privilege that were thrown at her because she was a princess rather than step down and marry the man she loved just shows what fairy tale lives these royals live.Margaret knew she was on to a good thing, as the rest of that family do....as long as the mugs keep throwing money at them, they'll keep taking. How they must laugh at us all.

Quite. Margaret didn't seem particularly "mindful of the Church's teaching" in the rest of her life.

YelloRoses · 21/04/2016 16:59

diana use to help a lot of the poor and be involved with the "peasants" so whilst she may of been a spoilt brat (i dont know just using your words) she at least did things

SuperFlyHigh · 21/04/2016 17:06

I really liked Diana she seemed far more real and in touch than the outdated monarchy.

Waity Katie and wills seem to be leeches. Prince Harry seems well meaning though.

BennyTheBall · 21/04/2016 17:26

I think Diana was a loon.

RaptorInaPorkPieHat · 21/04/2016 17:39

I kinda feel sorry for Phil. Nearly 95 and they're still dragging him out on engagements (and he's getting more cantankerous every day).

Queenie could easily live another 15-20 years (based on the QM) what with having her own private doctor and being a Lizard person

BennyTheBall · 21/04/2016 17:43

My friend has met Philip about 3 times. He says he's very sweary.

Heavens2Betsy · 21/04/2016 17:59

Ive found my tribe!!!
I was starting to feel like the only person in the world who isn't impressed that a 90 year old who has never lifted a finger or done a days work (I mean real work!) in her life can ride a bloody horse.
Parasites the bloody lot of them!!!
Wow that felt good!!! Grin

Dawndonnaagain · 21/04/2016 18:06

I'm a republican, I wish they'd all piss off and earn a living properly.

icanteven · 21/04/2016 18:10

I say this as a staunch Republican (anti-monarchy, feel the queen is an appalling parent, prob. not that bad a monarch, feel it is highly unlikely that Prince George, or even William, will ever be a king, or if he is, it will be more in the low key middle-class-friendly Scandi style), but I haven't seen all that much about the birthday.

Don't have a tv so I don't see that.

Online:

BBC News: yep
Guardian: nothing
Independent: Prince has been found dead, but nothing about any actual royals, except something about the cost of the Queen.

Don't read Telegraph/DM, although I imagine they're all over it.

Who else is there?

The Times: okay, that's a bit boak-worthy. I bought my Dad a Times sub recently to wean him off the Telegraph/DM, so at least his bizarrely conservative rhetoric would have some research behind it. Not sure he'll be convinced by today's fawning nonsense!

Beyond that, it's mostly threads on here complaining about it... Smile

Lockheart · 21/04/2016 18:11

I hardly think she's had a stress free life. She doesn't sit around in front of the telly all day. Personally you couldn't pay me enough to do the job.

Also arf at the idea the National Gallery a) can afford to take the Royal Collection and b) has the space to take the Royal Collection.

icanteven · 21/04/2016 18:24

"But William has wisely cautioned that you have to be careful with duty or else it can become a heavy heavy burden"

To be fair, it's pretty blatant that there has been a massive power struggle between Team William and Buckingham Palace over the last couple of years, when he made it pretty clear that he wanted to continue working as a pilot and lead a Middleton+ lifestyle. Since marrying he has leaned v heavily in favour of working and spending time with his wife's normal family instead of the royals, but was then strong-armed into becoming a "full time royal" whatever the fuck that is, before pushing back, and flying again. It's all back and forth. I don't think he is naturally indolent.

Ditto Prince Harry, who was taken out of the army and given a shit desk job, when he is obv. more of a "lad" and would far rather be in the army.

I would be surprised to learn that William has an ounce of respect for his father, and what he does when the queen dies, and her pressure is off, will be interesting.

YelloRoses · 21/04/2016 18:24

RaptorInaPorkPieHat lol

enchantedfairytale · 21/04/2016 18:30

I would favour a republic, but don't mind the Queen.

I suspect her death will possibly lead to an overhaul of the monarchy, so I'm happy to go along with it for now.

KERALA1 · 21/04/2016 18:42

End this ridiculous outdated charade. Nothing against them personally (bar Andrew partying with a paedophile yuck) but the whole thing should be done away with.

absolutelynotfabulous · 21/04/2016 18:43

Interview between Prince William and Nick Arselick Witchell today:

Witchell: ( in a toadying voice)."there are some people who think you don't do enough"
Will: "well I AM a father. I take that responsibility very seriously".

I'm wondering what'll happen when Queenie pops her clogs.

Are we really going to have to put up with a bloke who wants to be his mistress's tampon ffs?

Rainbunny · 21/04/2016 19:00

I have nothing against the queen herself and she has done a great job of performing her duties but it's time to pension the Royal Family off. I agree wholeheartedly with the suggestions made by Justletthemeatcake. Hopefully Charles as king we will see this ridiculous tradition ended in it's current form. He won't be anywhere near as popular as his mother and I can only imagine what his weekly meetings with the PM will be like, he can't stop meddling. I bet both Canada and Australia will vote to get rid of Charles at some point.

BennyTheBall · 21/04/2016 19:27

Just when I thought I could hold the bile down - Katherine Frigging Jenkins on the One Show singing the National Anthem. Shock Have never turned off so fast.

I turned it on expecting a Prince tribute - it was wall to wall sycophancy.

QueenLaBeefah · 21/04/2016 19:36

I don't mind the queen but I think after she dies we should get rid of the monarchy.

Heavens2Betsy · 21/04/2016 20:03

Katherine Jenkins was dire
As was Jennie Bond - I swear she thinks she's one of them

Livingtothefull · 21/04/2016 20:37

'Hugely privileged elderly lady with the best of medical care, lives a long time in a country where disabled benefits are being cut & people are relying on food banks - let's celebrate!!'.

I just don't get all the fawning and sycophancy, I don't wish the queen any ill at all and actually have respect for her personally…..but can't wait for this charade to end.

SeaMagic · 24/04/2016 12:55

I think 'the people' would prefer that the head of the Royal Family passes to Anne when the Queen dies.

She is the Royal I respect the most tbh. Not a whiff of scandal, seems calm and dignified, down to earth.

Apparently attends the most charity engagements out of all the Royals [I think?] but is so low key and unassuming about it.

I think Queen Anne has a lovely ring to it Grin

eaglesreach · 24/04/2016 14:38

I've never liked Anne. All that "she doesn't suffer fools gladly" nonsense. More like she's got a short fuse like her equally irritable father, and takes it out on people who are basically trying to earn a living. I've no time for any of them. They're all equally greedy, with a huge sense of entitlement. I hate the way people hang on to their every word and laugh at the slightest bit of what passes for humour when they're trying to pretend they're just like us. They're past their sell by date. A presidency run like Ireland's would be far cheaper, the tourists would still come (probably more if we throw open all the palaces) it's time they went.
