To keep lottery winnings to myself

Pixienott0005 · 19/04/2016 20:57

I've won £30 on the lottery, woohoo lol. But I really want to buy a new dress for a much needed night out. We are a bit hard up at the minute, I haven't bought anything for months and months, everything goes on baby. I know if I told dp he'd want to go for a meal as we rarely go or say put it towards shopping, but I really need a new outfit to go out in!! Aibu?

Who bought the ticket - you, or both of you? If you bought it, I'd say treat yourself.

TheSnowFairy · 19/04/2016 21:16

£30, YANBU.

£3 million... YABU.

YANBU enjoy your charity shop bargin dress :)

CadburysTastesVileNow · 19/04/2016 21:21

'Cos that's what you're going to tell him it is! (Well, if you were me you would)

Orwellschild · 19/04/2016 21:27

Agree with Akire - it was a fiver in the local Cancer Research shop!
Enjoy your frock Smile

CointreauVersial · 19/04/2016 21:29

Treat yourself. You deserve it.

RabbitSaysWoof · 19/04/2016 21:33

Do it.
Winnings? What winnings?

Pixienott0005 · 19/04/2016 21:44

Thank you all. I saw a second hand bag in Save the Children, it was only £2.00. I'll have £23 to play with! So excited, I'm gonna look fab!!

seagreengirl · 19/04/2016 21:46

Treat yourself, you have as much right to say how the money is spent as he does.

Ilovetorrentialrain · 19/04/2016 21:58

Get the dress, you'll look (and therefore feel too) fab. Congrats on the win!

RealityCheque · 19/04/2016 21:59

Ah yes, I remember.

If the man wins some money it's "family money". He would be expected to share and be truthful.

If the woman wins it then it's hers. She may spend it in clothes and then lie about how much she paid / where they came from.

Fucking mumsnet double standards. Confused

Ilovetorrentialrain · 19/04/2016 21:59

Hang on though - not a shared ticket? If definitely your winnings I say get the dress. If you both paid for the ticket, I'd be boring and share.

Ilovetorrentialrain · 19/04/2016 22:01

RealityCheque The OP has clearly said 'I won' - I've assumed from that, not family money but hers only. If it is family money then of course it's wrong to blow it on a dress with no discussion.

Salfordlass · 19/04/2016 22:03

Aw bless u for even asking us! I'd spend it without a second thought (cow that I am)

Bogeyface · 19/04/2016 22:03

I see lottery wins under £50 as mine because although strictly speaking all our money is family money, I have a budget and so does he and I use my budget for the tickets. Also, I am the one who remembers to get it, goes and buys it, checks the numbers etc. But that said, it would 99% of the time get swallowed up in food shopping or something, or occasionally I would buy a specific item but it would be for the house.

The most we ever won was about £90 and it was so long ago I cant remember what we did with it tbh!

I used to go to bingo and I once won £500, and that was shared. We all went out for a nice dinner, the kids got a treat each and.....cant remember what happened with the rest!

Tatiana11235 · 19/04/2016 22:04

Oh just go for it. It'll do you a world of good to feel beautiful and special if you have a small child.

Oysterbabe · 19/04/2016 22:08

I don't play anymore after they increased the amount of numbers and made the odds so much worse. My dad won 40k on the football pools a couple of years ago though.

RealityCheque · 19/04/2016 22:10

We are a bit hard up at the minute, I haven't bought anything for months and months, everything goes on baby

except the money that I waste on the lottery

Regardless about whether it's 'family money', it is not OK to lie about buying stuff. If it was a bloke doing it the responses would be different.

Sheld0n · 19/04/2016 22:15

What Reality said.

Tatiana11235 · 19/04/2016 22:17

Ignore the grumpy one up the thread, she/he clearly had a bad day Wink

rockabella · 19/04/2016 22:21

YANBU

but why not say you won less money and treat DP and yourself to pub lunch type meal and spend some time as a couple too, and buy a cheaper dress then you get the bestof both!

Pub lunch for two and a dress, all for £30? What planet are you on?

Xmasbaby11 · 19/04/2016 22:30

I wouldn't lie. Dh wouldn't mind me spending the money on myself.
