calling your baby sexy?

I was browsing Facebook last night and came across a post asking if this person was wrong as they called their child sexy all the time and friends had expressed their disgust with this. A lot of the comments were saying how they also called their children sexy, 'sexy legs', 'sexy bum' etc.

Now, I don't know whether IABU as its not my place to judge and/or whether I am getting on my feminist high horse, but I think this is entirely inappropriate to call your child sexy? Please please PLEASE for the love of God tell me IANBU with this.....

I would never imagine calling my son sexy! I personally think it's a bit icky, how could you look at your own child in that way??!! Isn't it also sort of setting a bit of a precedent for the kid?

Yanbu op, I too think its inappropriate. There's no reason to ever describe a baby or child this way.

Glad you posted this. Someone I know calls their DD sexy, she is 3. She called my DD sexy when she put a hair clip in her hair, I was wtf but didn't say anything, I will ask her not to if there is another occurance

Walking in the park at the weekend with dd1 we passed a family with a girl who was around 4/5 saying 'I'm not sexy today' to her siblings who were calling her sexy whilst strutting in a spaghetti strap dress (it was freezing).

Dd judged on my behalf and she's only 7.

Modern society encourages women to equate self worth with physical attractiveness. For some women that boils down to the word "sexy" meaning something has worth, something to be desired. Mostly women who have Nutella for brains!!

No you're not wrong. It's completely weird. Weird enough with the parents using it for little babies to mean cute, but even weirder for the 5-10 year olds when they seem to mean it more like the actual meaning Confused talking about little girls strutting in heels and party dresses and calling them sexy. Think for a second you raging numpties!

Maybe it's a regional thing - have never heard this in Scotland but have seen similar things on the FB pages of southern English friends.

It's hugely inappropriate and as chavvy as it gets.

YANBU. It's creepy. Reminds me of when my uncle gave me loads of T-shirts to sleep in when I was about 6. One of them said "I'm too sexy for this T-shirt".. that one was confiscated pretty fast.

Ew. No you are definitely definitely definitely not BU. It's gross. They'd children. They are many lovely things but not sexy! Ick. Got the shudders just thinking about it. Feels a bit peado to call a child sexy imo.

The comments were along the lines of 'I mean it as in cute and a nice way' - JUST DAY CUTE THEN!!

Although one comment did make me laugh, one woman claimed that it didn't matter about the 'actual/dictionary' definition of the word sexy as she used it in a different way and another poster said 'well if I call you a cunt but I don't think of it as the general consensus means it, would you take offence?'- inevitably she kicked off, oh the irony.

I once, over ten years ago, saw a girl, can't have been older than 9 or 10, slightly chunky, might have been puppy fat, wearing a tight t-shirt. Stretched across her chest were the words "Look But Don't Touch." The mind really does boggle. Confused Hmm

Totally inappropriate for any child. My son's (otherwise lovely) hairdresser has said this a couple of time when doing his hair and it has irritated me (but she's the first and only hairdresser he would ever sit for so I have to bite my tongue!) if he ever picks up on it I will have to think again.

There are many hundreds of appropriate adjectives for your baby - or any baby, in fact. 'Sexy' is not one of them. FFS.
