To have second thoughts about renting this flat because the atmosphere felt odd

The first time we viewed it I thought it was lovely. Ground floor in an old house, high ceilings, huge bedrooms, 3 sets of French doors to beautiful communal gardens, big windows, great location.

We went to view it again and as soon as I entered hall I felt there was something wrong. All the hairs on my neck stood up and I felt sick, shaky. Even in the garden I felt very uneasy. I was fine when we left.

DH wants to rent it. He thinks my reaction was U, says if I'm worried about security we can put wireless sensors on all the windows.

WWYD?

I wouldn't rent it if it was me. I get home sick very easy though (I even get it at my own house occasionally) so if the flat doesn't feel right I say find one that does. You don't want to move in a few months if you can't get settled

I wouldn't rent it! I remember years ago viewing a flat to rent and being really frightened for some strange reason. I couldn't wait to step outside. When I told the estate agent that I wasn't interested in renting it he started chatting and said he thought it was haunted! So he'd obviously had the same reaction as I'd had.

Firm believer in gut instinct, I wouldn't rent it either.

Go with your gut instinct. Once my DH husband choose a flat (in our youth!) without me. Second I walked into it I hated it and had a bad feeling. It was a nightmare tenancy! We found out our landlord was actually a convicted paedophile (we saw this on the local news). The neighbours were hell. The place was damp and weird. I couldn't relax. We moved into our next home and we were so happy and chilled we made our first baby ;) Always go with your feeling.... look else where!

I don't believe in ghosts at all, so don't think the way you felt was woo related, but personally I wouldn't rent it either. That would be enough to put me off. I too get home sick/anxiety quite easily and the memory of getting that uneasy feeling would be enough to spook me.

No, I don't believe in ghosts either, but I've learned the hard way to listen to instinct.

If it's a slow enough market that you got two viewings, you probably don't have to rent it!

I do believe that if you feel uncomfortable, you shouldn't live there.

I believe in morphic resonance which is I believe when events have happened in a place the effects can be felt in some way (not necessarily woo) years later.

Example - friend of a friend lived in a house where one room was always inexplicably freezing cold turns out the man who'd lived there had killed himself in that room. No one knew.

Another Friend stayed in hotel/b&b in country and felt distinctly awful feelings about one room, so much so her choir friends who she was with stayed in the room with her, it was haunted too.

Me - not had many woo experiences but on a haunted pub tour was in Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese (I think Pepys went there off Fleet Street) thought it was nice enough had a drink had to go downstairs (lots of nooks and crannies) to toilets when going to them and when inside I got the most horrid feeling like something bad had or would happen and made my friend come with me, another poster here opheliaballs posted on another thread she'd had a similar experience when she visited same pub and toilets with her DD. when we went to a pub with "haunted cells" near old Bailey I felt nothing at all, nada.

So yes don't rent this place at all! Your spidey senses are tingling for a reason don't ignore them!

View it for a third time op, imagine your furniture and the nice things you will do in each room.

If you still have the feeling, I wouldn't rent, I don't like going against my gut instinct at all

You're not going to forget that feeling! Whether you believe in ghosts or not go with your gut instinct and find another flat, you won't be happy there.

I probably wouldn't just because you might feel like that while living there. Maybe it reminds you of somewhere you have forgotten that had bad connotations or something.

When I first walked into the flat I'm currently living in I hated it. I had a feeling of dread as soon as I walked over the threshold. Throughout the viewing I felt like I was being watched. Unfortunately we had to take the flat and I became quite depressed knowing that I'd have to live there.

We've been here nine years now and I can't imagine calling any other place home. We have two children now too who love their home.

Don't get me wrong it's totally haunted but it's more "spooky" than "scary" and stuff doesn't happen every day. More like three or four times a year tops.

The worst thing you can do here is leave the flat, forget something, then go back in. That's when you get max dose of "The Atmosphere". It can stop you in your tacks.

I'm probably not helping - what I mean is bad neighbours are a problem. Spooky home, meh, you get use to it.

Don't rent it. You will never feel comfortable there.

Luckily when H and I viewed houses we had the same gut feelings - one place we got to the start of the drive, it felt wrong so we didn't even bother to view it.

I don't know if I believe in ghosts and woo woo but I definitely believe if you don't feel comfortable when you walk in somewhere you never will.

I agree with Fanjo - something in your subconscious is urgently ringing its bell and alerting you to a mostly-forgotten memory. I imagine it's completely irrelevant wrt your current life, but you probably won't be comfortable living there with that memory lurking. Shame but there it is.

If there really is no logical reason for your feeling then I'd discount it and would take the flat. By the time you've got your stuff in it it will feel like home.
