To have second thoughts about renting this flat because the atmosphere felt odd

The first time we viewed it I thought it was lovely. Ground floor in an old house, high ceilings, huge bedrooms, 3 sets of French doors to beautiful communal gardens, big windows, great location.

We went to view it again and as soon as I entered hall I felt there was something wrong. All the hairs on my neck stood up and I felt sick, shaky. Even in the garden I felt very uneasy. I was fine when we left.

DH wants to rent it. He thinks my reaction was U, says if I'm worried about security we can put wireless sensors on all the windows.

WWYD?

I'd love high ceilings. Swop you for a garden? ;)

CockacidalManiac · 16/04/2016 22:28

Houses and flats have a 'feeling' to me too, like they want you there or they don't. I wouldn't rent anywhere that didn't feel comfortable to me; your home is too important.

RaeSkywalker · 16/04/2016 22:30

You deserve to feel comfortable in your home. Maybe go for another viewing, but don't rent it if you're not sure.

Pico2 · 16/04/2016 22:35

I don't believe in anything 'woo', but have rejected a house because I instinctively felt that I would end up with depression living there. There was no single thing I could put my finger on, I just felt it.

areyoubeingserviced · 16/04/2016 22:36

Don't rent it
Do not ignore your instincts

Dowser · 16/04/2016 23:13

Oooh! I love a bit of device less dowsing!

Dowser · 16/04/2016 23:17

You could make a pendulum. A necklace on a slim metal chain would do. Get it to show you yes. Then no.

Then ask,
If we rent this house will I regret living there.

How beneficial would it be for me to live there . 50 per cent, 60, 70, 80 . Say the numbers when pendulum shows you yes...that's how beneficial. You want 7 or over.

Or you can ask detrimental. You want under three.

I think you have a gift.

To those who think haunting and ghosts is a load of old.... Hot air...

My mum has a bona fide ghost story which I've mentioned here before... I personally have never seen a ghost but don't doubt they may exist.

Poikjhvcx · 16/04/2016 23:30

Nothing wrong with not liking the atmosphere of a place but it's a bit bonkers not to like it because you think there is a ghost there or because you get a sinister 'feeling' Confused

SuperFlyHigh · 16/04/2016 23:31

Anyone read Peter Ackroyd I think History of London?

In one of the chapters he mentions how certain areas and streets of London (as an example of a city) have some sort of leylines, or keep the imprint of past events etc or buildings.

One example is Victoria Street where I temped for 2 years about 8 years ago. I always felt it seemed dark with the buildings etc... Gloomy if you say so... Never happy. Anyway apparently he said a mental asylum for women was built there there could be another reason too. Also I think Paddington, similar I think because on Tyburn hangings route. Strange to say Marble Arch which is where the old Tyburn tree stood, have never felt anything about that at all! I can't tell you exactly about it as the book is at parents holiday home in France but it made sense to me about certain places, areas keeping hold of past events etc.

Poikjhvcx · 16/04/2016 23:31

instinctively felt that I would end up with depression living there. There was no single thing I could put my finger on, I just felt it.

Isn't that just not liking or warming to somewhere though? That's a reasonable reaction.

SuperFlyHigh · 16/04/2016 23:33

Poik ok then. I dare you to go into the toilet in Ye Olde Cheshire cheese pub in London (downstairs in bowels as it were of pub where all the nooks and crannies are) and see if you don't get an eerie feeling.

SuperFlyHigh · 16/04/2016 23:34

poik I think what I'm getting at is intuition or spidey senses which sometimes have an uncanny knack of being spot on whether you like it or not!

Personally I love spirits but only from a bottle eg gin and vodka! hic!

summerdreams · 17/04/2016 01:35

I felt like this about a flat me and my ex partner rented, something made me feel uneasy but I thought It was me being stupid but we ended up having a really Bad time there it was nothing to do with the flat just coincided with a really bad time in our life's and I think the gut feeling was knowing we would be unhappy there.

NapQueen · 17/04/2016 01:43

I want to know more about Furiosas experiences!

I dont believe in ghosts but I am always waiting being proved wrong.

oldlaundbooth · 17/04/2016 01:50

Went to visit a house, I hated it as soon as we walked through the door, negative atmosphere.

Bought another house instead in the same neighbourhood. The one with the odd atmosphere has been for sale at least three times since we moved.

ephemeralfairy · 17/04/2016 02:00

Nope nope nope. I had a bad feeling about our last London flat, I thought it was too small and I suspected damp but it was cheap. It was ok at first but it became obvious that our landlord was pretty shady, and we ended up with damp problems and blocked drains so bad that we couldn't use the toilet and had to walk to the Tesco toilet down the road. Awful.

novemberchild · 17/04/2016 02:15

We once lived in a flat in an old house with a lot of 'atmosphere' about it. It didn't bother us, although we sometimes, in particular locations, felt like we were being watched. However, people that came to stay with us (different people) told us they had strange dreams about women in Victorian clothing telling them they were not welcome.

It makes me feel a bit peculiar to write that out. We did notice that after we moved out, the next people only rented it for the minimum term before it going up to let again. Eventually, it was put up for sale but hasn't sold yet...

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 17/04/2016 02:24

It could be haunted or it could be that your chemicals do not mix well with the ambience of the property and it doesn't welcome you. When I moved into my home. It felt like id lived in there all my life.
YNBU not to take it. If you don't feel that youll be content and relaxed there. You'd be the one living there.

ivegotdreadfulpmttoday · 17/04/2016 06:19

YABU for not putting this in the woo section of MN. You don't need a reason not to rent it other than you don't like it.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 17/04/2016 06:23

Superfly no sorry its woo science Smile

whatamess0815 · 17/04/2016 06:29

can you view it a 3rd time?

InlandTiger · 17/04/2016 06:35

Thanks everyone

I wonder why it felt peaceful and welcoming the first viewing?

The second viewing it felt like the air inside was different, sort of thicker and menacing. Oppressive.

We're going to view it once more though I'm fairly sure we won't rent it now, it's more DH wants me to see it again in case I feel differently!

OP posts:
rainbowstardrops · 17/04/2016 06:44

Before your update I was going to suggest viewing it a third time. After all, you really liked it to begin with.
Maybe the weather was different for the second viewing and the light inside was therefore changed?

Think I'd also try to speak to the other people renting flats in the building and ask their opinions.

Sounds a lovely flat btw Smile
