should I ask for money for trousers?

I work in a clean environment. Wore a new pair of trousers today for first time. The cleaner was off sick. We were having a special visitor. I was asked if I could clean the kitchen. I said that was fine. I used cilit bang all purpose cleaner. I've just noticed my new black trousers have orange marks on them like bleach so must be off the cilit bang.

Would you ask for the money for the trousers?

Yes I certainly would, you would have dressed appropriately had you know you would be cleaning today, so did a favour so I would expect not to be out of pocket from it.

Same thing happened to me once on a new dress. I claimed through work and got my money as cleaning wasn't in my job description.

Depends where you work. I used to work in a very large professional place and if this sort of thing had happened the manager would have been happy to pay for something like this out of expenses as it would have been a pretty minor cost. But if you are working in a restaurant that is struggling to make ends meet then I imagine they would be thinking you should have taken more care and worn an apron or something and would not be wanting to pay you.

I think it kind of depends on your job. If you were dressed for office work and then ended up cleaning then I'd claim.

But if for waitressing, for example, a job where you might expect to come into contact with cleaning products, food stains etc, I wouldn't.

I've never used anything like Cillit Bang, so if I were in that situation then no, I would assume its just an ordinary (overpriced) product.

I wouldn't. It seems petty. I once cleaned at work using cilit bang and it did that to my black jeggings... it was my fault not theirs!

Yes, I would. Seems fair to me if a new item of clothing has been ruined because you kindly helped out and did something you weren't expecting to do when you got dressed that morning.

My boss came over to me as I was leaving and thanked me for doing the kitchen and apologised that he had asked me and that he wouldn't normally but we had the special visitor. I said it was ok and I didn't mind but I'm annoyed as my new trousers have been ruined. He said oh no, how much were they. He got out his own wallet and gave me the money! He said he'll put a claim in for expenses. I said don't be silly I don't need the money right now and he said well it's only right as he did ask me to do it.

I feel guilty now!
