How is the least U way to leave a thread on MN?

So, I have a rule about people being wrong on the internet. I am only allowed to argue with them as long as I have nothing better to do in real life (sitting typing into my phone at a dinner party is right out), if it isn't actually upsetting me or making me angry (life is too short) and if I feel I am actually making a positive contribution (so if I'm not changing anyone's mind and they aren't changing mine it seems pointless to keep flogging the dead horse).

This means I periodically do pull out of threads but I'm never sure what the most polite way of doing it is. Do you say "well, thank you for this but I won't be replying any more?" I sometimes do this but it always feels a bit like flouncing which is bad. Or do you just mute the thread and stop replying? Is it rude then to ignore hypothetical people who might be talking at you?

Which is U? And what other options are there?

That's a fairly good point. I generally just feel guilty if people have aimed comments/questions at me. But that might be me being neurotic and 90% of the time they'll forget about me straight after posting.

I've done the whole 'right, think I've said all I can say here' post, and still had posters (one in particular) that just will not drop it, so it looks like I've flounced. I've recently name changed, so don't get 'noticed' as much - so can disappear in a thread quite easily. Just fucking off is the easiest way (as long as you haven't just been a goady git for the sake of it). Most of us have busy lives and can't just hang on one thread all day.

Stop going on thread, hide it, deregister, delete browser from phone, set fire to Internet. Then pretend it all never happened.

I never quite know how to leave a PM.

After a couple of replies, I think "Is it rude if I leave it now? It's not like they've asked me a question or anything"

I just don't post on it - I assume nobody will care and I'm probably right!

Just hide the thread. You'll soon forget it existed. Whoever you're arguing with will either find someone else to disagree with, or not... whatever.

No it's not rude to ignore hypothetical people who might be talking to you. Because they're not talking 'to' you, they're sending a message which you may or may not see, and may or may not choose to respond to.

I wish I could apply this to my real life work emails.

I realized I cared way too much about this stuff when I found I was getting really annoyed about an argument I was having here on MN, and I realized that I could have avoided all that annoyance by just walking away.

Well just recently I called a bellend a bellend on a thread and then reported my own post. I suspect that is not the way to do it

I usually go for reasoned querying of nonsense and then say I'm not engaging any more. Or just go and do something more interesting like... taking the bins out.

Worra I'm the same with texts. At what point can I stop? Sometimes I wish people would text "bye" so I know it's over.

Actually there are probably about 20 posters who I would feel bad about offending and about 3 million who behave like twats and live in Aibu so I don't care what they think or if I upset them by calling out twattishness.

Out of Aibu people tend to be a bit less awful for the sake of it and so I'm more patient and less likely to get annoyed because people are just less cunty there.
