To think nothing good will come from this?

Obviously a name change.

DF has applied to go on a famous Fly on the Wall type programme. She's lovely, great fun, a perfect friend. This programme is renowned for its snidy commentary.

I'm concerned that whatever she does could be represented badly in the edit. I think she needs her bumps feeling, I think she could be crushed by the final programme. There's nothing I can do, filming starts soon. I'll be there as a supportive friend whenif I'm needed.

AIBU to think this is unlikely to go well?

I kinda really want some YABU answers, folks, and you to convince me I'm an utter cynic.

YANBU but all you can do is be there like a good mate when it does go tits up.

I hate those sort of programmes - Come Dine With Me, perchance? I'd rather chew my arms off!

Yeah, I can't understand why she's then go ahead. She's a great ideal candidate for what the programme purports to be about. . And would want the chance to show this. But the programme is so much more than that.

Yeah she has.

She's the ideal candidate for what the programme purports to be about. But the programme is so much more than that.

My DD was invited to go on a program by channel 4 about teenage relationships. Based on the fact that she had had sexual relationships and had decided in hAs she was only 16 had to give my permission and i said something along the lines of "over my dead body". The researcher was incredulous that i wouldn't allow my DD to be "on the telly" and that she had genuinely changed her mind about it anyway. She was constantly telephoning to persuade us, i ended up telling her to go away!!! Hmm

I love come dine with me though, although there is no way i would appear on it. Its car crash tv at its best.

If she's watched the show before, then fully aware how she might come across. Her fault really if she comes away looking bad. She's making the choice.

Not benefits bashing, no.

I've spoken with her about the edit, in quite gentle terms. Her DH is one of the widest people I know, so he'll be there consistently to help with perspective.

If it's come dine with me I don't think there's any reason to worry. I mean everyone knows it's edited to look bad and purely about making silly snidey comments about the contestants. I think if anyone watches it and takes how people come across seriously, they're an utter fool.

Surely everyone knows come dine with me is just the TV equivalent of a caricature artist.

I think it depends on how she would cope with any negative publicity. DS had recently taken part in a couple of fly on the wall documentaries and the entire family were screened by a psychologist and given media training to ensure we were up to negative comments in the press/twitter etc. It was a great experience for us and I don't regret it at all, but the production company were very responsible and sensible even though they clearly needed to make an entertaining programme.

A friend of mine went on a similar program. She's genuinely the most beautiful person inside & out. She came across really really well on it.
The abuse and vile things people said on Twitter, it was eye opening. They were bloody awful "she should fuck off and die" was one gem.
Honestly she said and did nothing horrid, she wasn't edited badly either.
But some of the stuff was awful. Most was lovely admittedly, but the bad stuff was BAD

Catphrase - that's quite terrifying - that you can be perfectly pleasant and normal and still get all the twitter shite.

OP - I can see why you're concerned, but all you can really do is stand back and hope for the best.

Whats the point of not even saying which programme it is? There's not much to say without knowing, or even which type ie food? benefits? gameshow? Tbh it just makes it sound like sour grapes on your part if you're that reticent about it. Im sure your friend is a fully functioning adult, has been briefed by producers and is happy with her choice, so just let her enjoy herself doing the show. If all goes badly - which hopefully it won't, as not every tv experience is bad - then as you say you will be a supportive friend so, just leave it at that

Not sure what you mean by this, but if you're thinking he'll be able to influence the editing you might want to reconsider

We took part in the first two series of C4's Home From Home (about house swapping holidays) and they wanted us for the third. Trouble is, by then the whole tone of the thing had changed, and the directors wanted "edgier" programmes which basically involved taking the piss out of the other folks' houses

We said no
