No, not the huge snow storm in the US or King Tuts beard

But

Magnums and Cornettos are to shrink!

It's made the scrolling breaking news on BBC World news.

AIBU to think civilisation really has come to an end? First it was Cadbury and their creme eggs, then the annual downsizing of 'Christmas Choc' packs and now flippin Magnums!! --I didn't know they still made Cornettos but I never could have 'justa one'.

Anyone feeling the pain?

I love the shrinking chocolate. I have the 'little but often' approach to chocolate. Wish the price didn't stay the same. Sad

StitchesInTime · 24/01/2016 16:08

Full size Magnums are too big for me. I prefer the mini-Magnums.

It wouldn't surprise me at all if the price remains the same for the shrunken ones though.

Millionsmom · 24/01/2016 16:10

Aah MrsP, I'm slipping, I hadn't even thought tha the price would stay the same. Angry

It just gets worse.

What's up with King Tut's beard?

NeedsAMousekatool · 24/01/2016 16:14

I could go for a small Magnum right now

Oysterbabe · 24/01/2016 16:16

Yanbu.

Millionsmom · 24/01/2016 16:16

steff the guys fixing his beard back on, used epoxy resin to glue it back on. They've been put on trial for it.

ewbank · 24/01/2016 16:16

Same will be happening to Coke and drinks cans.

It's about EU laws on sugar content. They can't squeeze out any more sugar without affecting recipe, so they make it smaller instead...

MrsTerryPratchett · 24/01/2016 16:17

What's up with King Tut's beard? It fell off and some numpty glued it on with school glue. Looked awful. But doesn't look as awful and Creme Eggs now taste. See what I did there?

Millionsmom · 24/01/2016 16:18

Lol, though I think the resulting taste would be similar Grin

Whatever it is they're doing they need to keep doing it, on principle I've stopped buying Cream Eggs and Christmas boxes of chocolates, now this, my annual attempt at a bikini bod is easier this year than ever before.

I am gutted about what they did to cream eggs though, somehow changed the recipe and then only five in a pack.

AGreatBigWorld · 24/01/2016 16:33

I buy the co-op magnum equivalent. Exactly the same and four for £2!!! Grin

hefzi · 24/01/2016 16:36

Hang on, only five creme eggs in a pack? I didn't buy any last year, but I am feeling cheated on principle! The whole point is the sickly, squidgy magnitude of a packet that's just like a regular egg box (or used to be, anyway, back in t'day). I haven't had Cadbury's since Kraft took them over, actually - but I see from MN that things have changed, and not in a good way.

As for Tutankhamun's beard: I remember reading at the time about that repair - but tbf, this would have been acceptable once in conservation. About 100 years ago.

I did read somewhere that the reason they shrink the size but leave the price the same is to do with fluctuations in various commodities' markets - apparently, consumers would rather the price stayed the same, but the size shrank, rather than paying the additional cost to have the old sized product. Cocoa in particular, I think, has soared in price, which explains why tins of, for example, Quality St, etc, have got smaller. Not that there's much chocolate on a Cornetto, mind you!

Bananalanacake · 24/01/2016 16:49

And I'd love to know what's happened to the sales of Smarties since they did away with the plastic lid and gave it a cardboard flip lid (yes, I did collect the lids).

UndramaticPause · 24/01/2016 16:50

I'm a lover of the mini raspberry magnums, can't eat a whole one, but love a full size strawberry cornetto. Gutted.

Whoknewitcouldbeso · 24/01/2016 16:50

I have only eaten about two Magnums in my lifetime and both were totally vile. I think shrinking them is probably the kindest thing you can do to them.

ClashCityRocker · 24/01/2016 16:54

I don't get magnums. Aren't tey just a choc ice on a stick?

Millionsmom · 24/01/2016 16:54

I used to try and spell my name with the lids. But my real name has 10 letters in.

I used to be so jealous of anyone called Anna, Emma, Julie.

The cardboard packs just aren't the same.

Millionsmom · 24/01/2016 16:56

Clash I think there's something magical about that first bite when the choc 'snaps'.

OP posts:
ChubbyPolecat · 24/01/2016 17:03

I really don't understand people who can't manage a whole magnum, I could eat one after the other if I wasn't losing g weight!

Oysterbabe · 24/01/2016 17:12

I can eat a whole magnum no problem. Am I the only one?

Oysterbabe · 24/01/2016 17:13

Ah I see chubby beat me to it Grin

Janeymoo50 · 24/01/2016 17:32

Asda do their own "magnums", 3 for £1.00. Bleeding lovely.
