To hate people going on about how beautiful my house is

When its absolutely freezing inside, costs a fortune to heat and its still not particularly warm or comfortable! This is for about half the year. I've done lots that I can do but it is listed.

I dream of building a modern but boring house. I've packed my suitcase and am staying in my friends modern house this weekend and I'm really looking forward to it.

Anyone else suffering in an old house and having to deal with people just commenting on how nice it looks despite bing very impractical?

I am so over living in a period house. Couldn't give a duck about original features yada yada. It's fucking freezing (ours isn't listed but I would cost a fortune to sort out every bastard draught) and we get loads of slugs inside. I'm not working at the mo and its pretty horrible to be stuck in this icebox all day.

What's the beef here? Is is annoyance that your house is cold, or annoyance that people say your house is beautiful?

I have a friend with a cold house, she went mental when I mentioned it.

YANBU Currently living in a cold old flat. It also looks lovely, but it's making me miserable in this weather.

My grandmother has a gorgeous holiday home in the countryside and I love going there for the summer, but it is VERY basic. No internet, limited hot water, frequent thunderstorms meaning you have to switch off the electricity, spider colonies, dodgy phone signal, bidets stronger pressure than the showers, 30 mins walk away from the nearest village so to live there you must have a car....
fine for a couple of months, refreshing in fact, but I couldn't live there. Such a relief to get back to nice showers & internet :-D

I used to like old houses.

Now I like comfort. My Dh always says he wants to move with a house with" character".

That can only happen upon divorce or death.

Well, to be fair, OP may not be able to move (Stamp Tax). I do know what you mean, OP, PLUS all the things that go wrong. Something in the kitchen is shorting my house's electrics at the moment, we were in the dark and cold last night (my poor six-year-olds!) and had to go to the chippy for their tea. Every year something expensive happens...

How old are your cold houses? And why are they so cold? Is it lack of cavity or loft insulation? Single glazed windows? Drafts?

I live in a 1900 house (sub-standard loft insulation and no cavity wall insulation). We replaced the original single glazed sash windows with PVC double glazed, we've had a new boiler and two new fires installed. I was so worried about it being freezing in the winter but it's been okay so far.

How much does your house cost to heat?

There are things you can do to insulate it! Secondary double glazing for example (the magnetic stuff is quite cheap) carpets not stone floors, loft insulation.... where is the cold coming from?

Oh, I lived in a lovely old period property. The heating bills were nearly 5k per year, and even then it was bloody freezing.

Moved out 3 years ago,and don't miss the draughts, the cold, the fact that something always needed doing at all

I hear you. The main part of my parents house was built in the 1500s. They're both retired and it costs them £000s to maintain and heat and stuff stops working all the time. It's really beautiful and they do love it... most of the time!

My house is an Edwardian terraced townhouse, with tall ceilings, tiled floors and sash windows. It is freezing. And damp.

I get it. We moved from a freezing house to a new build that barely needs the heating. Not a huge fan of my house but it's warm. Loved how the old house looked, but hated the cold and heating bills.

But they aren't commenting on how affordable it is to run.

Oakmaiden Wow, that does sound chilly but lovely. There is a really posh square near where I live of huge Georgian houses all with stone floors, high ceilings, original sash windows. DH really wants to live in one at some point but I break out in a cold sweat thinking of the heating bills and drafts.

Just explain to all the admirers that you hate living there because it's impractical, freezing and uncomfortable. That will shut them up.

Not that people say our house is beautiful but it's bloody freezing. It was 9!!! degrees in my kitchen this morning, no heat source in the kitchen at all. We spend most of our time in the living room where we at least have a working radiator and a wood burning stove

Why the hell did you move in then? It's a well known fact that it is extremely difficult to get any modernisation work carried out on listed buildings?

Put another jumper on and stop your moaning. I am sorry, but I just can't feel any sympathy for you. Therefore YABU.

If your AIBU was 'AIBU to not realise my beautiful house would be costly to heat and I am constantly freezing' rather than AIBU to HATE people commenting on my beautiful listed building house. Then you would have been less U.

Well if you are fed up of it - move or buy a jumper.
