Anyone had a sucessful root canal that caused no problems?

Bottom front tooth is so painful to touch and i think it is dying due to teeth grinding trauma I've got jaw joint problems because of this also.
Seeing dentist in Thurs but looks like I'll need a root canal or extraction and it's my front tooth.
Reading up online and can't find any positive things about having a root canal but really don't want to lose a front tooth and I'm only in my late 20s.

Did it discolour the tooth if you don't mind me asking? Will I also need a crown? Gutted I need a root canal as I really look after my teeth and had nothing but trouble this year from the tooth grinding problems.

Had one about 18 months ago. Found it hideous to have done because I am severely dental phobic, but have had no problems since then.

3 so far. Never had a problem with any of them and they've been in 9 years, 6 years and maybe 18 months.

They don't last forever apparently but it's better than losing the tooth.

I had one about a year ago. No problems. Quite a long time I the the chair but is fine now and no discolouring or crown needed.

I had one more than 20 years ago. I remember that it took ages,more than an hour. I didn't like the injections much,but once my mouth was numb I didn't feel a thing. I've had no trouble with it since. It will be easier than a denture,OP. Good luck!

One of mine of my front tooth and it hasn't discoloured at all. The othe 2'are back teeth and are crowned so couldn't tell you.

I have a front top tooth root canal dating from c. 18 years ago. It discoloured a bit over time and I had a veneer put on about 4 years ago (annoyingly the veneer, done privately unlike the root canal, fell off twice in the first 6 months ). Tooth is holding up fine, no sign of problems. Extraction would have required braces over the long term and I was in my 20s at the time and didn't fancy that. Got two other (molar) root canals - one of which needed crowned 10 years after the original root canal. The third is mainly filling but holding in there.

I've had two, needed crowns on both (molars). They were a piece of cake, honestly - long (and very expensive) but absolutely no pain during or afterwards, and no complications. No discoloration that I can see.

My first one was a bit grim afterwards but only because it got infected. They redid it a few months ago & it was fine, just like a filling but a bit deeper. My tooth is a tiny bit greyish but it isn't right at the front so you can't tell at all. I've heard that you often do need a crown later on but it's been fine for 10 years so I'll deal with that if/when it happens.

Thanks so much everyone that all sounds very reassuring! My dentist has seen me so much in the last few months with problems with my jaw he joked that I would be getting invited to the christmas party last time I saw him dreading seeing him with another problem on Thurs!

I had one some years ago, it was fine and has been fine ever since. It was done without anaesthetic; the dentist did offer to give me some if I needed it, but he'd previously packed and killed the nerve, so I didn't feel a thing.

My experience is maybe unusual, but still, I think it's better to keep the tooth if you can.

I might hold the record here. I had two back lower molars root filled and crowned in 1976, and another one in 1983. Since then no problems, no pain, still intact. Cannot comment on the discolouration because they all have gold crowns. One crown had to be replaced after fifteen years (the newest one) because of some gum recession.

I've just had a tooth with a RC taken out. It was never right from when I had it done but I think it was just he was a shit dentist more than anything else. My tooth was greyish as it required a massive filling, so it was never going to be pretty.

Sort yourself out with a mouthguard; the grinding contributed to the wear of mine and defo helped weaken it to a point where I cracked it on a toffee the stress of getting it out ("I'm going to look like an old crone at 27!") made me grind more at night and I woke myself up on a few occasions hearing 'cracking' noises. I got one of these bad boys from Amazon and it's good quality and comfortable. It won't last forever but my dentist says it's not much different to the ones they'd supply for £120+.

Oh and don't worry about the RC. You're frozen up and it's painless, just takes ages. Don't be afraid to ask for the thing they can use to prop your mouth open if you get uncomfortable.

I had RC about 20 years ago. Didn't hurt a bit and no problems since, except for discolouration which was fixed by bleaching 13 years ago. My tooth had died though, so the discolouration wasn't caused by the RC.

Had a root canal ages ago on a front tooth on upper jaw.

Because the tooth itself was still a healthy colour my dentist managed to drill through the back of it for treatment, then filled it. He left it in place covered with a clear veneer stuff over it. Looking at it nobody would know it still isn't a healthy tooth.

It was a slightly uncomfortable procedure and the anaesthetic made my nose feel numb for a while as well as my mouth but it really wasn't that bad.

I've moved house since and gad to change dentists and every once in a while they suggest putting a crown on it... But each time they've just repeated whatever it was the original dentist did.

I've had 2. Both were and are still fine after many years! Slightly worse than having a normal filling done just because it took longer and I got jaw ache from having my mouth open for so long!!

Thanks everyone! Slightly worried about having to keep my mouth open for that long as I have some degree of limited opening because of my jaw problems so that won't be fun!

I had to have an emergency root canal on my top front tooth after an impact trauma that caused two severe fractures and led to the nerve dying. This was when I was 17 and I have had no problems in all the years since. I do get staining along the crack, but no discolouration of the tooth (although I have been told sometimes it does happen, sometimes it doesn't).

Besides having to go back after 4 weeks for a permanent filling (as it was emergency treatment they just used a temporary filling initially) I have had no problems whatsoever.

I think I've had 3. I say "think" because I've never had a moment's bother with the older ones and they must have been done over 15 years ago (when I was in my mid-20s) so I can't really remember.
