To get really annoyed at supermarkets

LordBrightside · 10/01/2016 10:15

who still require a coin to get a trolley? I mean, who steals trolleys nowadays?

Does my nut in. Many supermarkets don't have this outdated practice anymore and so often I don't have any coins on me.

It annoys me too, but I guess it's one of those things that keeps staffing costs down for budget supermarkets (by not having to pay someone to tidy trolleys up in the car park) so I suck it up because I like cheap food.

FayKorgasm · 10/01/2016 10:25

Since the bag charge came in people have been stealing baskets people driving naice cars who can afford a bag so a trolley would be very tempting.

Hoppinggreen · 10/01/2016 10:25

Our Sainsburys is in the middle of a large student town, if they didn't charge £1 i doubt they would have any left!!!
However, they do keep a "secret" stash of some that don't need a coin in one specific place ( customer services told me this once when I asked them for change)

Passmethecrisps · 10/01/2016 10:26

Our sainsburys only recently started doing this. Drives me potty. You can get the trolleys with a baby seat on without a coin and they are often left strewn around the car park. I imagine one motivation is it forces people to return them.

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 10/01/2016 10:29

Trolleys get stolen all the time. You'd be amazed. Baskets, too.

Asskicker · 10/01/2016 10:29

Our local morrisons took them off about 2 years ago. They put them back last year because people were taking them.
It's such a strange thing to do

NapoleonsNose · 10/01/2016 10:30

Lots of people steal trolleys. I used to work in a supermarket and we regularly used to get calls from people asking us to come and collect an abandoned trolley. The pound deposit thing is annoying, but it means a lower wage bill and lower prices. Our local Tesco is on top of a very windy hill, so it stops the rogue trolleys getting blown into cars and damaging them.

FayKorgasm · 10/01/2016 10:32

People are strange Ass .

AppleAndBlackberry · 10/01/2016 10:34

I don't think it's to do with stealing, I think it's so they get put back in the right place by customers. Aldi, Lidl etc don't employ anyone to do this as far as I can see, presumably to save costs.

treacledan71 · 10/01/2016 10:35

I forgot Iceland do coins other week and only had my card but they opened one for me when I asked. Just had to remember not to take a pound off anyone ie if some takes your trolley off you in car park etc

TrashPanda · 10/01/2016 10:36

You need one of these www.poundforlife.co.uk/single-trolley-tokens.html

SpecialLittleLady · 10/01/2016 10:43

It drives me mad .I have left rather than shopping before when I have been caught without a pound Blush

JolieColombe · 10/01/2016 10:45

Our local Tesco has a line painted by the car park exit, and if you try and push a trolley over it they stop working! (Did it once myself absentmindedly and came to a shuddering halt, very embarrassing.) I imagine this stops the majority of thefts, although I did see one very determined individual bumping their trolley along by sheer force outside the car park! Wonder if this works better than coins.

MardyBra · 10/01/2016 10:46

But those pound for life things cost £1.75. And you can never use the pound again. Confused

notenoughbottle · 10/01/2016 10:49

The bit of my town in which I live is nicknamed 'trolley town '. It is close to the local shopping centre and the half a mile long road is FULL of trolleys people have taken from the shops even though they have had to put a pound in them so I think you are being a bit u. I can totally understand why they still ask for a pound.

GruntledOne · 10/01/2016 10:51

I don't see the problem. I keep a pound coin in my car, it takes me all of 10 seconds extra to put the coin in and recover it when I've finished shopping. If I haven't got the car with me I don't want to buy a trolley-full anyway.

Supermanspants · 10/01/2016 10:51

Sainsbury's do a fob which you can use instead of a coin..... go to customer services and ask for one

Kryptonite · 10/01/2016 10:52

I can't get worked up by having to find a pound for trollies. You do realise that you get your pound back when you return it, right?! Confused
I'd much rather have to put a pound in one than not, as it stops people taking them.
Since the carrier bag charge came in, I've been noticing abandoned trollies round here sometimes, presumably because some of lazy arsed weirdos taking them home or something.

LordBrightside · 10/01/2016 10:53

I will not give my business willingly to any supermarket that does it. If I find this situation and I have time I go elsewhere, and if not I make a mental note never to return to that supermarket.

theycallmemellojello · 10/01/2016 10:53

Agree that it's not to do with stealing and more about saving on staffing costs. A pound is a bargain for a trolley, if you are inclined to steal.

WorraLiberty · 10/01/2016 10:53

I mean, who steals trolleys nowadays?

Lots of people. Ask your local council how many are found when they dredge the lakes.

Just get a trolley coin keyring and you'll always have one.

M48294Y · 10/01/2016 10:54

I just go to the customer services till and ask for change for the trolley. No biggie.

FiveShelties · 10/01/2016 10:54

It does annoy me as I can never find a coin, but if it stops someone leaving their trolley leaning (or worse) against my car than it is a fantastic idea.

LordBrightside · 10/01/2016 10:54

"Sainsbury's do a fob which you can use instead of a coin..... go to customer services and ask for one"
Surely anyone with a fob can steal a trolley then. So what's the point?

OP posts:
fruityb · 10/01/2016 10:54

I have a trolley token on my keys. I always have my keys when I'm at a supermarket. Job done. Having seen the theft of trolleys from a local supermarket when I was a student I can see why they do it!
