Aibu to think they should

Stick around till I'm finished? I sat down with the kids this morning to do a craft activity. We all enjoy craft, and mil have I'd ask the same craft kit so we could do them together - we were doing ceramic painting.

The kids finished first, then rushed off to play something else together. Aibu to think they should have stayed with me for the additional 20 minutes it took me, as we were doing the craft activity as a family? DH thinks I am.

How old are the kids? If they're still little their attention span isn't always the best, especially if there are other tempting activities around to tempt them! Also was your DH with you too?

If it was being done as a nice experience, then you have to let them off when they're bored.

Yes, it's a craft activity for them - they're done - maybe they don't enjoy it as much as you. Waiting on an adult for twenty minutes to finish an activity aimed at the kids sucks the fun out of it.

Adults tend to take these things a bit slower than kids, so I would assume they'd be bored once the 'fun bit' is over.

The 'fun bit' being their own painting.

I just wanted to know how this would be perceived during a different activity.

I don't get the whole 'it's rude to leave the table while others are still eating' thing. It's an old convention that people still stand by, and I personally disagree with it. I think it's rude to expect others to hang around and wait till you are finished.

I think this is a similar but relatable scenario, and I was just curious what people would say.

I think it's rude to expect others to hang around and wait till you are finished.

I suppose it depends on whether you see having a meal as a social activity or a necessary interruption to watching telly.

Why is your mil included?

We don't have the everyone must stay sat down until everyone has finished in our house.

Especially for the kids.

On Christmas Day, ds 4 ate and went and played with toys. Dd stayed sat with The adults out of choice.

I would never demand a child stayed sat down. Unless it was a restaurant. In which case we would hurry and leave if ds was getting bored and faffing around. That's not an issue now he is older though.

Eating is entirely different. If I've spent my time cooking a meal for everyone, the least they can do is sit still for the short time it takes everyone to eat it.

I don't expect my kids to hang around either...unless they want pudding. The meal ends when they get up and leave.

it's completely different.

Meal time is a time to catch up with the family, it's not about inhaling your food and running off, but it's about enjoying it, having a nice time and chatting ( not with your mouth full ). In a big family or friend gathering, the children are allowed to go and play and come back for desert of course. When it's a regular meal, of course they should stay at the table! It's also the only way to teach them to behave in a restaurant!

So if you're not done, you just sit there alone and talk to the wall? I find that kinda sad. What are they rushing off to do that is so much more important than you and the meal you cooked for them?

It isn't the same for everyone.

I catch up with the kids while cooking their dinner, they are in the kitchen. Or while dh cooks.

We have the rest of the evening to catch up.

I quite like it. We all eat together, have a chat then when the kids are finished they get up if they want. Me and dh are usually the last left and get 10 minutes to chat in peace then wash up.

Kids leaving the table doesn't bother some.

And yes, my kids behave in restaurants. As I said down thread. Ds is now almost 5 and knows when we eat out or at someone else house he should wait. In our own home it's different and the kids know that difference
