To ask you all what defines a "proper holiday"?

FIL has been visiting today . As lovely as he is , he is very much up his own backside .

His way and his things are always best .

Anyway , he asked if we were going on holiday this year .

We said yes and told him we were going to Holland for a week in August .

He was very cats bum face about this and asked when we're going to take the DC on a proper foreign holiday Confused

We've been to France , Germany and holidayed in the U.K. . Apparently these are not "proper foreign holidays".

Now I'm stupidly wondering if my DC are missing out on "proper holidays".

What do you define as a "proper foreign / abroad holiday ?" Confused

Well I define a proper holiday as going away from home even if that's camping in the UK. Doesn't have yo be abroad.

Not being at work & not being in own house = holiday.

To me a proper holiday is any time away from home that is for leisure purposes.

I assume he thinks you should be taking them to a holiday resort having a sitting by the pool type holiday?

We are going to a holiday resort - in Holland Grin

It's got pools / a beach etc .

I think he means a hot beach holiday.
I'm not keen on more than a day on the beach. To me "proper" means not in our house but we campervan in Scotland.

What a tool, his idea of a "proper" holiday is my idea of hell. I wouldn't thank you for 2 weeks next to a pool bored out of my skull

FIL is being a numpty. I consider anywhere that wasn't home as a holiday. Visiting friends, city breaks etc. Obviously doesn't count if it's not a happy reason to be there.

You haven't deprived DC. Suggest that FIL pays for a villa for a fortnight in the south of France If he's that bothered. Don't include him in it though!

A proper holiday for me is not being at home and choosing what we do. It is not lying by a pool drinking (for us), and so the ILs think we don't go on holiday.

A proper foreign holiday is any holiday in another country.

We went to Center Parcs in Belgium for last May half term and I consider that to be a proper foregin holiday.

I am going on holiday to a caravan park a couple of hours away for three nights.
It's s proper holiday because I said so.

Maybe he does think a beach holiday is proper then Confused

But we don't do beaches - dd2 has severe eczema and the sand is intolerable for her .

and it bores the hell out of me

Occasionally I do like lying by a pool on a sunbed. ILs only like holidays that involve walking 20+ miles a day in regions of the UK well known for horizontal rain 12 months' a year, so they always sneer at our holidays.

Stuff them - holidays are very personal.

A proper holiday means staying away from home & no-one having to go to work or do work.

Days spent out & about or relaxing rather than doing chores.

A holiday in a tent in Wales can be as much a "proper holiday" as a fortnight on a beach in Mauritius.

A proper holiday is the one you have chosen, planned for and looked forward to. There are very many places in the world and we each have our own preferences.

For me it needs to be nicer than home or else of great interest or loveliness. Others like climbing mountains or deep sea fishing.

Your FIL is just jealous. Where is he going?

Where is "nice" and what is relaxing is different for everybody.

A week in Holland is definitely a proper holiday!

I would say that if you are away from home for longer than 2 nights either in UK or abroad for leisure (rather than work related or duty visiting) then it's a holiday

A 'proper' holiday is one where I do not have to think about making beds, cleaning anything, cooking, meal planning or bastard shopping. (Not going into a supermarket is wonderful!)

I get up & wander into breakfast where there is an endless choice & (hopefully) an egg station so I can choose fried/scrambled/boiled/omelette or none of them & be healthy & have fruit.

I then drape myself over a sun lounger & read my newest book all day, interspersed with a swim.

Or I go out & explore.

I come back to my room about 5/6pm & it looks immaculate, as does the bathroom. Lounge around have great sex & maybe have a Wine

Have a shower & spend time on the body beautiful (HA!!) & then go out for a Wine followed by a lovely meal that I have neither thought about nor have to clear up.

Come back to said room & there will be a choc on my pillow (which I will give to DH as I hate choc) & the bathroom is sorted & then slip between the sheets & have a wonderful 8+ hours of zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

To be repeated for the next X days.

i went to two smashing euro camp sites in holland when kids were younger they were fantastic and were a real holiday to us .away from my own front door with things for kids to do is a holiday
